MMA Video Tribute: 9 ‘Falling Tree’ Knockouts

Video: Satoshi Ishii Works Out with Lyoto Machida

(Props: MMA Videos)

Is there such thing as elusive judo?  We may get to find out if this video is any indication of where Japanese judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii is learning the MMA game from.  He even pulls a nice little fireman’s carry on Lyoto Machida at 2:53 in.  You know it’s slick when Machida is smiling even as he hits the mat.

Say this for Ishii, he’s taking his entrance into MMA very seriously and is getting some of the best training he can find.  First he worked out with Randy Couture, and now Machida.  Next maybe he goes to Greg Jackson’s and starts flipping people on their heads.  Better soak it up while everyone still thinks of you as that harmless, nice Japanese guy from the Olympics.

After the jump, a study in how YouTube’s “Related Videos” feature gets weird in a hurry.

Okay, this makes sense, right?  We go from Ishii and Machida to a Machida highlight video, and a decent one at that.  The music choice is even oddly perfect in a way.  But then this happened…

I don’t get it.  Where did I go wrong?

Damn, Ishii's judo is sick! If he can transition even half of that level of skill into the MMA game, he's gonna be huge.

Is it just me or do Asian fighters not do well in the UFC (aside from BJ, of course)? They all seem to turn into Andy Wang's.

Machida? Dude's like a quater Asian! Plus he can knock people out, which is totally not an Asian characteristic. Then again he does have quite a bit of decision victories so....
  12. h10 Says:

    Thu, 03/12/09 - 03:51

he's half japanese, not a quarter japanese.

Yeah, I guess by "knock people out" you mean that 1 KO of Silva and the 1 TKO from strikes on Franklin. The other 2 TKOs were from a cut and a forfeit. So I guess based on doing it once or twice as a pro fighter - you are correct.

That highlight vid shows some blocked Machida strikes. I thought he didn't throw unless he was certain it would land. Also shows a decent combo here and there but a backing off from the opponent when one would normally finish. I guess he isn't normal though.

I just want to point out how proud I am that you guys are talking about the MMA vids and not the powergirls vid. I mean I fapped immediately but Machida needs Judo work lol.

To Dr: You know that condoscending asshole way you answered that question actually brings up another point. There are no knockout artists in the UFC of Asian decent. To PG-13: Can't see the videos. Limited access on the work comp. Can barely even see Coleman palming that one chick's ass cuz the monitor's too dim.

To H10: Lyoto is the son of a Japanese-Brazilian Shotokan karate master, Yoshizo Machida. Unless his mom has some Asian in her (not countin Yoshizo), then that would make him a quater Asian.

actually his father was born in japan, not in brazil (I don't know this for a fact, but his accent is very thick to be a born brazilian). so that would make him 1/2 japanese. But who cares, he's brazilian, that's how I look at it (of japanese decent).

I love watching Machida highlights, hes got some sick stuff and it cuts out all the eluding and gets straight to the point.
  21. h10 Says:

    Thu, 03/12/09 - 04:25

yep, made a search online and found that Yoshizo Machida was born in Ibaragui (japan) and came to brazil in 1968 (source at the federal karate association's website). word of advice, don't believe everything you read on wikipedia, it's edited by us and not 100% truth source.

The fireman's carry is called Kata Guruma in judo... judo names ftw

FYI Says: dont waste your breath and expect a lifestyles columnist to know any martial arts terminology apart from the ones they picked up at their Gracie masturbathon. Kata guruma is the one throw I would try against a fighter with even an inkling of muay thay. Ishii's judo is not sick. It is good, based on speed and power, less technical than most asians. He won his one international event which puts him in the same category as the previous japanese who won the gold before him, Suzuki. He is not a legend of the sport like David Douillet was or like the 19 year old french giant who is the current world champion.. If you've followed the Paris Invitational this year you would see that Ishii is getting more airplay from MMA fans based on something that he hasnt done yet rather than from judo fans who have moved on already. Its hard for people to miss a guy who was never there. He also didnt look any bigger than Machida during their sparring so maybe he will cut down to LHW.

I really hope Satoshi ends up being a great fighter. I train Judo and love seeing it used in MMA. A well executed judo throw is one of the most beautiful things to see. Now if only karo would stop taking pain killers.....

Machida is sick. He's the perfect blend. Half Japanese, Half Brazilian. He's got the stand up, the ground game, and the Japanese Craziness. Yes, he has many wins by decision, but if matches had more than 3 rounds, you would see a whole lot more submissions and KO's. He's patient, he's well rounded, and he has no marks on his face.
  27. SMH Says:

    Fri, 03/13/09 - 06:11

Don't worry. When he becomes Champ, he'll have 5 rounds to finish fights.

I'm actually crying right now in awe, you guys are still talking MMA and not the world record benchpress... Immeditely Faps...again.

the term 'Japanese Brazilian' doesn't mean that the person is 1/2 Japanese and 1/2 Brazilian. It means that his Nationality is Brazilian and his Ethnic descent is Japanese. Kind of like 'African American'. Or 'Asian American'. Or 'Mexican American'. etc. So that makes Lyoto Machida a half Japanese half Brazilian. Make sense ?
