Tim Sylvia may have resurrected his career, however briefly, with last night’s first-round TKO win over Jason Riley, who seems to be a textbook Chuck Liddell fan. As you can see in this video, Riley doesn’t look like he’s the most technically sound striker Sylvia has ever faced, and after getting clipped behind the ear early on he spends most of the rest of the fight trying to hang out in the clinch. It’s not too long before Sylvia catches him with an uppercut/left hook combo and then, as Michael Schiavello puts it, it’s "goodnight, Irene." Charming, that guy.
Obviously, a win over 6-1 Jason Riley probably isn’t going to launch Sylvia into a UFC heavyweight title fight, but that’s not really the stakes he’s playing for at the moment. He just needed to not suffer another embarrassing loss, and he accomplished that. Way to go. See what’s possible when you set the bar really, really low?
Elsewhere on the card, Houston Alexander managed to end his losing streak with a first-round TKO of Sherman Pendergarst (video of that fight is here, if you’re interested) thanks mostly to a series of leg kicks that seemed to utterly baffle Pendergarst. The win apparently pumped Alexander up something fierce because he then declared himself "one of the best fighters in the light heavyweight division." Hope the athletic commission tests for hallucinogens.

LOL, I like Houston but he beats a scrub and acts like he just took out Machida... he's got a long way to go. If he ever makes it back into the Octogon I doubt he'll last more than a fight.

This announcer is way better than Goldberg, anything is better than "It's aaaall over!"

timmmmmmy!!!

yeah wtf was the point of him cutting to 287? is 287 a new weight class, like Washed Up JokeWeight.

I had to do a double-take when they announced Sherman Pendergrast's record. 11-14? Dude's only won 3 of his last 15 fights! That was do or die for Houston. That was why he was celebrating like he just KO'd Machida.

Glad Houston (Or Hooston according to the commentator) got a win again, fighting out of the awesomely named "Team Doyle". But that win meant nothing, Pendergarst wasn't there to fight, he didn't throw one punch all night and his takedown attempt was one of the worse I've seen in both Pro and Am fights. Houston is having a laugh if he thinks the UFC will be that easy But that win was no where near enough for Tim to get his career back on track. Riley was a nobody who rocked Tim more than once. Its like beating up on a 200 lb midget, no matter how well you do, your never going to win.

Sylvia should cut back down to 265. Then do Nutrisystem commercials for the rest of his life.

two washed up fighters trying to act like they are still worth anything. Who the hell is dumb enough to sponosr them
Sat, 09/19/09 - 11:44
Did he say "the big kabosh"? Because that would be just awesome!
Sat, 09/19/09 - 11:51
"And he calls out Pedergrast! COME ON, SON! WHAT HAVE YOU GOT!" Time for Goldberg to step it up. BTW, was anyone else thinking "O'Doyle rules!"?
Sat, 09/19/09 - 12:06
@BigBear Houston is still signed to the UFC (they allowed him to take a warm up fight outside of the promotion) So I wouldn't say he was washed up just yet.

It's good to see Tim winning again. I always thought he was a tragic figure and I don't like to see him sad.
Sat, 09/19/09 - 12:21
2 more wins under his belt and the UFC sign's Sylvia. They're dumpster diving for heavyweights. You'll see. Dont feel bad laughing, I pissed myself just typing the statement. But I can see it happening.

yea michael schiavello always shouts "THE BIG KABOSH!!!" every time someone lands a pretty good shot that rocks a guy...its cool every now and again but he says it in every K1 event and alot of times when he says it the punch really didnt do anything

For a second there, I thought I was watching bully beatdown...

Best MMA Commentators: Bas Rutten, Michael Schiavello, and Joe Rogan. In my version of heaven, those three dudes cover every fight.

Gotta love Michael Schiavello's color comments like: " He has more combos than the value menu at McDonald's" or " He's been taken down to the ground more times than Jenna Haze"
