Video: UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs. Shields Episode 3

(Video courtesy of DailyMotion/129PT3)

If you missed the final episode of UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs. Shields last night, here’s your hook-up.

In this instalment we get to see Jake Shields juggling being father and a fighter.

Of perhaps more interest is that, while training with UFC light heavyweight prospect and former Division I wrestler Phil Davis, Shields did pretty well controlling Mr. Wonderful on the ground. Davis remarked that although he had no problem getting Shields to the ground, he couldn’t hold him there or retain control over the Cesar Gracie black belt — which is something he says he’s never had a problem with before. Sure GSP will probably get Shields down, but the question Saturday night will be what he is able to do when he does.

St-Pierre seems to be putting a lot of focus on his striking ¬†– primarily his boxing, which could be an indicator that he wants to keep the fight on the feet where he holds a definitive edge. In spite of his proclamation that he isn’t worried about being on the mat with Shields, doing so would be akin to playing Russian Roulette since there’s a chance he may be surprised.

RwilsonR- April 28, 2011 at 4:39 pm
@ RearNakedSpoon - yeah, because a slow fighter lacking any explosiveness, posessing awful stand-up, and requiring a clinch to secure a takedown to employ their jiu-jitsu game as the only chance of winning is exactly the recipe for defeating Anderson Silva! Just ask Demian Maia and Thales Leites.
jailjitz- April 28, 2011 at 4:38 pm
GSP has a fragile pysche. Shields grinds out a win the same way he beat Henderson.

*who is in no way in the same class*
Angry Whopper- April 28, 2011 at 3:16 pm
it's only been forever since i posted, but whatever. for all the shields fans who want to talk about how great he is on the ground, and what a threat he can be from his back or otherwise on the mat, consider this: bj penn is also a spectacular ju jitsu practitioner, and look what gsp did to him.

naturally gsp can take shields down at will. he might even do so. but when he does it won't be for a grappling clinic, you numpties. it'll be for a face bashing clinic if it gets to that position.

i can't help but remember how shields squeaked out a controversial decision against kampmann - a fighter who is in no what in the same class as a gsp, penn, fitch, etc.

so pop that in your pipe and smoke it, muthafuckas

Shields daughter is a bit chubby.

Yeah, you may have a point there, actually I think that the main event fight may be most boring one of the whole UFC 129 event.
intercept440- April 28, 2011 at 2:45 pm
looking back at it its funny actually becasue both shields and fitch have exaclty the same number of decision wins at 13 each..
they must have trained at the blanket factory together
intercept440- April 28, 2011 at 2:41 pm
@ringo, i dont even like fitch bro, him and shields fights are both like ambien to me. they are both boring when was the last time either of them finished a fight
Ringo- April 28, 2011 at 2:23 pm
@intercept if by "fitch would gnp shields face to death" you mean dry hump him to death, then yes.
I was just pointing out that fact, you would like to think that both have evolved as fighters from back 2005...
get off fitch's nuts man, he is boring, never looks to finish, neither by gnp or submision, he just dry humps his way to decisions and that is a fact, he may be the most boring fighter in the UFC.
intercept440- April 28, 2011 at 1:48 pm
and BTW im not talking Jew jitsu either, im talking ground game over all, fitch would gnp shields face to death, strait up jew jitsu shields is better but this isnt a grappling tourney either its a fight
intercept440- April 28, 2011 at 1:46 pm
@ringo dont be so absurd, that was in 2005 knuckledick, 6 years ago. the fitch of today, destroys jake shields of today

WithoutRemorse- April 28, 2011 at 1:03 pm
@RearNakedSpoon WHAT? nah that aint going to happen brahh. Silva's waYYYY to good for Shields.

I'm a huge GSP fan... but to be honest I'd like to see him lose... hear me out...I just dont enjoy seeing him ensuring wins with risk free performances. I'd love to see him explode in a 3 rounder for a change and finish someone. BUT then again... I don't think that i could stand to see the shit eating grin on Shields face if he were to win. So yeah.. five round 50-45 unanimous decision.... yawn.
RearNakedSpoon- April 28, 2011 at 12:40 pm
I really really hope Shields moves back up to 185 after this, he will be perfect for taking out Silva.
LOKI- April 28, 2011 at 12:39 pm
I really want Jake to win this fight, but am I the only one who has a morbid fascination to see what happens if GSP wins by boring decision or miraculous spectacular finish, knowing that Jake's corner man is Nick?
If Nick really wants to move on to boxing and truely dosent give a fuck, we could see Nashville+the GnR riot of '92. That shit would be so fucking glorious I cant even imagine!
agentsmith- April 28, 2011 at 12:31 pm
Shields is a threat on the ground, but consider this: he couldn't sub Mayhem, Hendo, or Kampmann... and in fact he would have been subbed by Mayhem himself if he bell hadn't saved him. Sure, the first two are middleweights, but GSP is going to be bigger than Shields too. So it's not like GSP is going to be toast as soon as it hits the mat... he's not Paul Daley.
Kid Clam Curtains- April 28, 2011 at 11:43 am
FTR, I think GSP wins. However, Shields > Fitch for sure.
Sgt. 606- April 28, 2011 at 11:41 am
Fitch better than Shields? GTFO with that shit.

Huh...Wha??? Oh sorry, I thought about the two fighting and fell asleep for a bit.
Ringo- April 28, 2011 at 11:04 am
@intercept, you do know that Shields already beat Fitch in a grappling contest, right?
WuTangClan- April 28, 2011 at 11:00 am
"Jake does whats unexpected...and I expect him to win this fight"

LOL wow.
