Videos: Gomi, Sato from Vale Tudo Japan 2009

(Rumina Sato vs. Cory Grant, 10/30/09)

You may have been too busy putting the finishing touches on your half-assed pop culture-referencing costume to notice, but Takanori Gomi was one of several Japanese MMA fighters to get back into action at Vale Tudo Japan 2009 in Tokyo this past weekend.  The event also included Rumina Sato, who you see in the above video effectively using those pesky leg kicks to soften up Cory Grant before putting him away, and Takeshi Inoue, who dispatched former Shooto champ Alexandre Franca Nogueira with strikes in the fourth round.

Video of Gomi’s five-round battle with American Tony Hervey is after the jump.  It’s a pretty fun little scrap, and definitely worth watching.

That was an entertaining fight. Too bad Gomi gassed so hard after trying to finish in the third. I had it 48-46 Gomi, with scores of 10-9, 10-9, 10-8, 8-10, and 10-10.

I agree with the others that Gomi looks like he wouldn't do well in the UFC LW division.

High level contender? Unless he joined a real camp and rededicated himself, I don't see him breaking into the top 5 at this point.

I think he would lose (on most nights) to:
BJ Penn
Kenny Florian
Gray Maynard
Frank Edgar
Diego Sanchez
Sean Sherk
Tyson Griffin
Joe Stevenson

I think he'd have a tough time with:
Efrain Escudero
Possibly Diaz
Possibly Fisher
Possibly Lauzon
Possibly Cole Miller

He's really fallen off since his days in PRIDE.

Sucks for Grant. He looked to be winning the fight till that little flurry that knocked him down.

Sad to say Gomi wouldn't even be a high level contender in the UFC LW division these days.
