21 Humans Who Make Being Human Look Really, Really Hard

Videos: Jones vs. Vera Fight Hype, GSP Protects This House

(Props: YouTube.com/UFC)

You know what sucks? We have to wait three whole weeks until Jon Jones and Brandon Vera headline the UFC’s first event on Versus (March 21st; Broomfield, Colorado). What the hell are we going to do in the meantime?(And don’t say "Volunteer at a soup kitchen"; this is no time for jokes.) In the above hype-videos, Bones promises fireworks against Vera, and says he’ll give the Truth a striking war if that’s what he wants. He also makes a dig at Vera’s well-known hubris, saying he’s not the kind of guy to call out Chuck Liddell after winning his first UFC fight; Bones has a black belt in humility, apparently. Brandon Vera is aware that Jones has been blowing through his opponents, but feels that he’s never fought anybody on Brandon’s level, and his chin hasn’t been tested yet. ("It’s really easy to be the hammer, but it’s hard to be the nail.") Anybody see Vera winning this one? Anybody?

After the jump: Georges St. Pierre sweats alongside Michael Phelps in a new ad for Under Armour. Let’s be thankful this wasn’t an ad for Reebok.

It' an advantage to be a good kicker in MMA,but versus a good wrestler like Jones, those kicks are not that much of an advantage anymore!!!Remember GSP vs Alves!!!And Alves is an awesome kicker;1 of the best.
And your scenario, philippekchrun;you got it all wrong!
Jones won't have to strike to open Vera for a take down;Vera will open himself by "trying"those kicks!

Vera vs Jones!
Jon Jones's only been fighting for what...2 yrs!
Even if he loses,he's a future champs anyway! That I'm sure of!
He is a pure athlete, with a scary wrestling game;that's equal dynamite!I only saw him fight 2-3 times and I like him really much.
Vera relate to much on his muaï-thaï,Not that he is not good, but he is not as exiting as Jones is.
I can't wait for this fight, and I'll go with Jones for this one.

There are a lot of fighters in the game who have the technical skills but just never live up to the promise.

UFC cant keep them all.

Its true that he did have the momentum and the fury to go far for a hot second before his contract tantrum, but now its gone.

He misplaced it somewhere.

And there is no rule regarding things like that to guarantee he'll ever find it again.

If he loses this one too hopefully UFC will do him and everybody a favor by sending him down the road to do some soul searching because he's just not catching his wind in the kitchen.

I'm not saying Vera's going to win this for sure, but I think people are undervaluing him as a fighter.

His skills are all there, it's really just a question of intensity for him. Sometimes he just seems to have no killer instinct at all when he gets in the ring. But I actually think this is a very close fight in terms of the level these guys are respectively on.

Vera's striking is very technical. It'll be interesting whether Jones' unorthodox style translates against someone with Vera's kickboxing or if this time he's going to have to wrestle to win.

Oh, and when Gonzaga loses to Dos Santos, he'll be out of the UFC fo' sho.

MMmmmnnyeah, I can't see Vera doing too much here. I gotta go with El Guapo in that he looked pretty good at the start of his career, and then one day he lost the spark, drive, whatever and it's been all downhill for him since.

Maybe he's reinvented himself for this fight against Jones. Maybe he's found the drive and desire to crush an opponent that we've seen in the past. Maybe his good looking wife told him to stop looking like a chump or she's gonna drop him before DW does. Who knows.

The potential exists for Vera to do something impressive, but the potential is also there for Jones to impressively knock him the F out.

@DazedandConfused - I would mark your words, except my 1 billion page notebook for marking the words of people who are all over J.Joneses nuts saying he is the next big thing was completely filled up about a year ago.

Yes Jones is awesome. Maybe he will murder Vera. Shit, sorry, I mean, maybe he will fight him so hard that he beats him very badly. But on paper it is not a huge stretch to say it would be a close fight or even to say Vera comes away with a W. We all know that the scenario on paper doesn't always play out (damn you Mike Swick), and all it takes is one little mistake, but Vera has pretty solid skills.

I wish I was that bawla-ass commercial.
Kimbos Bread- February 26, 2010 at 5:48 pm
I'm still a Vera fan. Win or lose, I like the guy.

That commercial was awesome.

And I have nothing against Couture with those comments. Im just saying Big Nog, beat him. And I just don't consider Randy to be a top contender anymore. I will admit he always brings a great gameplan to every fight though.
DazedNConfused- February 26, 2010 at 4:06 pm
I dont see one way Vera will beat Jones. Are you guys serious? ill throw done 100$ on that fight, and im broke as shit. Like wrestling? JONES, by far. Striking? Pretty even, but Vera couldnt even put away Couture. On the ground? JONES. I mean shit, Vera loses to Couture (probably shouldve won) , while Jones makes Hamill look like a little bitch and rookie. Im willing to bet Jones would have killed Couture. Jones is the next big thing. Mark my words.
philippekchrun- February 26, 2010 at 3:51 pm
Fight is gonna be huge. Vera by strikes in the 2nd round. Can't wait for that first kick to the body. Looking at Bones' frame, he can't take more than 2-3 solid body kicks before the old broken ribs scenario. Then what happens to the wrestling? Only chance he has is to use strikes to open up Vera for the takedown, then vicious 'bows.

"It's a planned attack. These moves have been trained... several times."
robthom- February 26, 2010 at 2:59 pm
I just took a quick look at veras record to remind myself whether he has won any fights recently, and its interesting that he never really had any big wins anyway.

Biggest win was probably mir who anybody could beat on the right day, especially when he had just come back from that crash.

I remember the hype because he was steamrolling contenders in spectacular fashion for a second, but we never actually got to see the proof that he was really any better than good.

I dont know, I guess he makes a fair enough gatekeeper as long as he's not taking money out of the pockets of more valuable fighters.
2phresh- February 26, 2010 at 2:47 pm
Vera is trying to become Jardin, win loss win win loss loss win.....

hoepfully he wins
PortlandMMA- February 26, 2010 at 2:10 pm
^

I know what you mean, when he destroyed Mir everyone on Earth was calling him the next best thing...I have no idea what the fuck happened though.
El Guapo- February 26, 2010 at 1:44 pm
Whatever happened to the "Early Brandon Vera" anyway?? I liked him MUCH better than this guy. Great nickname, by the way.
Sakuraba3900- February 26, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Im saying Vera wins it.

10 bucks on it.

Infectious Disease- February 26, 2010 at 1:11 pm
Bones Jones has been practicing a tried and tested mortal kombat technique called the Scorpion "Get over here". Be ready for a snake like object to emerge from his hand and pierce Vera's torso.
PortlandMMA- February 26, 2010 at 1:09 pm
I like Jones and hope he wins but I see a way Vera could win this fight...it'd be a boring ass frustrating fight to watch but he could do it.
ccman- February 26, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Actually i could see Jones losing this fight.

It is still MMA, Vera still hits pretty damn hard, and he definitely has something to proove after the gift win given to Couture.

Obviously Jones is favored but i do not think by as much as you apparently think. Should not be a walk thru.
