According to Kenny Florian, his October 2006 loss to Sean Sherk transformed him from a fighter who wanted to compete with his opponents to a fighter who wants to destroy his opponents — and he’ll be bringing his renewed intensity to the cage with him against BJ Penn at UFC 101 (August 8th, Philadelphia). In this recent interview with Inside MMA, Florian also discusses training with Georges St. Pierre, getting his named botched by Dr. Phil, and his four-letter prediction for the Penn scrap. By the way, if BJ bitches out between now and August and drops out of the fight, Diego Sanchez is totally cool to step in.
Above: Justin T. at FighterPortraits.com sent us this video of some dude at some MMA event last weekend skillfully dodging his opponent’s attempt at a pre-fight glove-tap and knocking the shit out of him with an overhand right. This is exactly why we think the traditional touch of gloves should be changed to the much-safer bro nod. It’s like, yeah, I see you, we don’t have to touch hands like a couple of sissies or whatever, let’s just get after it homie.
Below: The Mercer/Sylvia knockout, from a different angle. The look on Ray’s face after Sylvia lands that leg kick tells the whole story. You ain’t shit, Tim.

commentsGet it out of MMA. Oh and wtf was with Stevenson going for the glove touch at the begining of each round against Nate Diaz. You know he aint gonna touch, its almost like he is trying to piss him off or something. When you know your opponent doesn't touch gloves to even attempt seems stupid, and when he declines you in the first round don't attempt again in the second or third.
I like how the broadcaster was like "If you're 6'8, why would you get in close?".. Sylvia is soooooo stupid..
As for Penn/Florian, I whole-heartedly believe that BJ will underestimate Florian, come in out of shape, and probably lose..
EDIT: How long as this edit feature been here?
There is no rule that you HAVE to tap gloves at the start... But it is something you see in almost every single MMA bout that happens...
They tap at the ref.. then most times raise up and tap again after the bell rings.
But if someone raises up to do it-- You can at least have the common decency to shake your head NO I aint here to be nice!
--Even Nate and Nick Diaz at least give that much.
The guy who did that is a bitch... That move was dirty and pretty cowardly
I look forward to watching this same dirty trick happen to him one day.
Would Tim have even had any attempted strikes, if this was strickly a boxing match?
And the dude in the second video. Dirty. Real Dirty. You guys ever notice that super weird ref that is in the WEC, and always asks the fighters if they are gonna touch gloves? Super critical about everything, but fights shouldn't end like that one, with one dude trying to high five, and the other destroying his face.
1) They had already touched gloves.
2) Both of them came charging out of their respective corners, which is certainly not characteristic of 2 guys that are going to touch gloves (yet again). You don't come charging out of your corner at the start of a fight and then decide to touch gloves when you meet in the center of the ring, after just touching gloves during the referee's instructions seconds earlier.
3) When the guy who extended his hand recognized that his opponent wasn't going to touch gloves, all he did was open his hand. He didn't move his body, didn't move his head, and didn't cover up. He just opened his hand. What the fuhk is that? This is why the ref says "defend yourself at all times", dumbass.
That dude deserved to get knocked out.
This is what webster's says:
for?mer
1??/?f?rm?r/ [fawr-mer]
–adjective
1. preceding in time; prior or earlier: during a former stage in the proceedings.
2. past, long past, or ancient: in former times.
3. preceding in order; being the first of two: Our former manufacturing process was too costly.
4. being the first mentioned of two (distinguished from latter): The former suggestion was preferred to the latter.
5. having once, or previously, been; erstwhile: a former president.
"But ... but, they were once champion!!!" yeah.... & they're not anymore which means there are better people out there. If we measure champions on their ability to beat older/washed up people, who used to be good, it's rather pointless to call them a champion in the first place.
I still like Fedor & I still think he's a beast, but champions fight the best, not who's convenient for them.
Yeah except Fedor did not knock out Sylvia moron. Great thinking though fanboy.
