Volkmann Suspended With Pay From High School Wrestling Coach Gig While Administrators ‘Investigate’ Obama Comments

(Volkmann got Obama’ed on The Tonight Show)

Jacob Volkmann will likely think twice next time about cracking a joke about wanting to ground and pound the Commander in Chief of the United States.

The UFC lightweight, who made headlines when the Secret Service paid him a visit to question him about post-UFC 125 comments he made about wanting to go a few rounds with President Barack Obama so he could show him what he thought of his healthcare policy.

It now appears that the tongue-in-cheek soundbite he fed Ariel Helwani got him more than just a spot on The Tonight Show and Fox Business News

Volkmann was informed this week that he has been temporarily suspended with pay from his assistant wrestling coach position he has held for the past several years at White Bear Lake Area High School, pending an investigation of his remarks about Obama by the school administrators.

The 30-year-old Minnesota chiropractor who owns his own practice also serves as the volunteer head coach of the town’s elementary school wrestling team, but was told that his non-paid coaching position was not at risk.

He told Sherdog that the reason he was given for the "suspension" was that he was basically guilty of exercising his First Amendment rights, which "may send the wrong message to the kids he coaches" even though authorities  dismissed the perceived threat as being a non-issue a week ago.

“It’s very frustrating that they think that I’m being a bad influence on the students.” Volkmann said. “That’s what their reason was [for placing me on leave].

He has explained his choice of words ad-nauseum, but it didn’t stop the school board from launching it’s own investigation.

"I deal with a lot of insurance, and the [healthcare] bill gave insurance companies quite a bit of power. But it forced them to also give insurance to everybody, which I’m not against that at all. I’m just against the power that they got to deny claims and to deny coverage to health care providers," he explained. "So that’s why I was speaking. I was speaking through the provider’s standpoint, not the insured’s standpoint.”

Although the media attention seems to have tapered off, Volkmann says that newspaper, magazine and TV interview requests continue to roll in.

“I don’t even think it’s done yet,” Volkmann said. “I’ve got fricking ‘Inside Edition’ coming tomorrow.”

"If someone said the same thing about Bush, or Clinton, or anyone else they shouldn't get visited by government officials or possibly lose their job."

People did, and they did. Dude got held and interrogated in my town here for making an offhand joke about getting Bush while he was in town for a campaign stop in 2004 at a Taco Bell. Held for 7 hours until well after Bush had left. It is not all new because there's a black man. Obama wasn't the first president to use a teleprompted, the Secret Service takes all voiced threats to any President very seriously. C'mon folks, get a sense of perspective. The guy said something stupid, got a cursory visit from the feds, like has happened hundreds of times all over the country, in every modern administration.

And don't go on about free speech if you don't understand it. Free speech doesn't mean you can walk around running your mouth like a fucking moron without ever worrying about consequences. It means that the government does not restrict speech beyond reasonable measurements (fire in a crowded theater, etc). It has nothing to do with how the public reacts, or the media reacts, or an employer. You are free to say what you want and the rest of us are free to react to it in non-violent ways, for good or bad.

@Lutador Vomitando: Volkmann wanted to fucking make this about politics himself. He wouldn't of mentioned the whole wanting to fight Obama over his health care policy thing on national tv otherwise. You'd think this was fucking blatantly obvious.

@donfryesmustache: Motherfucking werd.
donfryesmustache- January 13, 2011 at 10:06 am
Mountain out of a molehill, but he shoulda kept his mouth shut about politics when he's being asked an MMA question
Lutador Vomitando- January 13, 2011 at 9:49 am
Why do people like Anzus want to argue about the political points about what Volkmann said? The point of this story, as well as the other stories about him are that regardless of whether you agree with what he said or you think he was stupid, he shouldn't have been visited by the Secret Service or suspended from his job. What he said was not a serious threat to the President, as evidenced by the Secret Service apologizing for the confusion of the matter once things were cleared up. Nor is it even half as bad as many political rants I have heard out of countless teachers.

I don't really care what the fuck he said, it was pretty mild and it didn't deserve this kind of reaction. And whatever your political views, it should be a little concerning to you about what happens if you speak your mind publicly. If someone said the same thing about Bush, or Clinton, or anyone else they shouldn't get visited by government officials or possibly lose their job. Threats need to be taken seriously. This did not.

Around here, we call that getting "Miley'd".
Morningwood- January 13, 2011 at 7:27 am
@Darkhorse

Exactly! The only thing I would add is he's also one of the most friendly guys you'll ever meet outside the cage.
DARKHORSE06- January 13, 2011 at 6:37 am
I know some people that know Volkmann and they confirm he is every bit as charming and together as he appears in the video. What investigation results could they possibly be waiting for? An akward and weird guy made an akward and weird comment that he was hoping would be funny. Case fucking closed.
k-onda- January 13, 2011 at 6:15 am
Wait wait, suspended WITH pay? That sounds awesome.
And "Duh!" to anyone who doesn't understand that making a threat will get you checked out (how can you not be aware of the times we live in) - and remember, he hasn't lost anything but he has gained some free time and a bit of fame.
Also, LOL at canadianguy correcting rlh61's reading of the article while getting nailed for bad grammar! hahaha, fucking interweb, that's rich.
rlh61- January 13, 2011 at 6:06 am
Desolation...I hear that...unsually I can get by without drawing attention to it...but then I go and post a comment (or comments) making it obvious! Go figure.
Anzus- January 13, 2011 at 6:03 am
@KarmaAteMyCat:

He is Sonnen-like in that he is a pasty, weird looking, idiot Republican. Their career pursuits outside of fighting are similarly dodgy as well.

@Fatbellyfrank:

I disagree. For starters, the PM is a middle aged woman, a professional mixed martial artist asking to fight her would be viewed as being in poor taste.

Asking to fight someone or being generally aggressive towards them because you disagree with their views (political or otherwise) is generally interpreted as a sign of inability to articulate oneself, in other words, intellectual weakness - (The Mark Latham handshake is a classic example, he thought he looked like a tough cunt, the public thought he looked like a fucking idiot). I'm not convinced people in Aus wouldn't think this guy is a wanker for expressing himself in this manner.

If Volkmann did it because he is a fighter himself and he thought it seemed funny or like a good metaphor for his disagreement with Obama's politics or some shit, then all this amounts to is him grandstanding and injecting his own personal political views into a public arena reserved for the appreciation of sporting prowess, not a platform for frustrated Republicans to bitch about government legislation they personally disagree with. He should be fucking whingeing on his own time.

DesolationUSA- January 13, 2011 at 5:45 am
No problem rlh61, I've done similar things before. Just skimming through and miss a rather important word here or there.
fatbellyfrank- January 13, 2011 at 5:42 am

You cant threaten the the president, it has *always* been this way. If you say "Id like to kick Obama's ass" and your neighbor calls the Secret Service, you *will* be getting interviewed. The fact that some fool did it on what amounts to national TV (the news) guarantees a visit. This is a free speech issue in teh same way that yelling "FIRE!" in a movie theater is a free speech issue - you cant threaten the President of the country, period. The fuckwads in control take that shit VERY seriously - if you have the balls to threaten the president, "what else will you do?" is the thought track.

Now, you have an employee of a *SCHOOL* that goes on "national" tv and even jokingly "threatens" the president. What the fuck is teh school district supposed to do? Hold him up as an example for all the kids? "When someone in government doesnt do what you like, call them stupid and threaten them". He should be held up as a BAD example for the kids on this one, no matter whatever else he does in the community.

Face it, the guy is an idiot, and he made a stupid ass joke. SHould be lose his job? No. Should he be publicly castigated? Yeah, probably so...for stupidity.

@desolationUSA and canadianguy

Thanks for pointing that out to me...don't I feel a bit sheepish now. I could have sworn I didn't see 'elementary' the first time I read through it, but maybe selectivity is at work here on my part.

As for being dumb or not reading well, neither is the case, sir. (You should have said 'read very well' not 'read very good', but who's counting?) Simply a matter of scanning the article too quickly and being rather sloppy.

canadianguy- January 13, 2011 at 2:57 am
rlh61 and noname both of you must not be able to read very good or your just plain dumb but it clearly states that he is the assistant coach of the high school team which he gets paid for (and is now suspended with pay from), he volunteers as the head coach for the towns elementary school team.
PERPATRAITOR- January 13, 2011 at 1:39 am
You know Obama grabbed only his black secret agents and just scared the shit out of volk all gangster like. It's a shake down bitch!

fatbellyfrank made me lol
dranokills- January 12, 2011 at 10:47 pm

If it was me, I would tell them that while I was suspended, they could go fuck themselves for the FREE job. When they pull their own dicks out of each others mouth and get off his ass he can go back to normal, fuck your paid suspension.

And isn't a crying fucking shame you can't say you wanna beat up the president but every comedian who smokes dope can say whatever they want about him, and threaten to fuck him in his black ass, or saTURDay night JIVE can do a million fucking spoofs on the big eared fag, and hell everyone's OK with that. Go fuck yourself my lovely knee jerk reactionary Government.

If my Great President would spend half the time fixing the fucked up state of affairs we live in that he and his STAFF spend on hunting down evil bad MMA guys who speak their mind, think of the "Progress" we would get instead of dry-humping my leg during election with his great stories, and fantasyland promises.
KarmaAteMyCat- January 12, 2011 at 10:38 pm
FBF! What the fuck is up! You survived the storm! WHOA! Hey man I was hurt you didn't mention my name the other day after I offered to help you go all Zombie Apocalypse on the locals and what not. Though I hear the political system in Australia is mildly skewed and can come off fairly one sided. I'd still love to go there and eat a Roo Burger. Good to see your still alive.
fatbellyfrank- January 12, 2011 at 10:25 pm
If he made a comment like this in Australia, he'd already have a glove, shorts and mouthpeice sponsor
KarmaAteMyCat- January 12, 2011 at 10:21 pm
Accept he's being suspended on some serious bullshit. So he isn't like Sonnen at all and, the fact that the media has failed on every level to educate the masses on the health care situation is ill reason to terminate or put someone on suspension for making sarcastic comment.

He really did nothing wrong. The fact that Homeland security was even involved at all is Hilarious in its own right. He will either get his job back or he will sue an already broke school system. It's Win/Win for him. Isn't he coming off a win in the UFC as well? Nothing less then entertaining to me.

You want a debate? The only thing we should be debating is how retarded this situation is. How much money we think he'll get from the settlement. Who he fights next. Seriously? Inside Edition? Fucking HILARIOUS!

I love stories like this. It reminds me why I love being a fucking American. Drama, Drama, Drama, Freedoms, and the fact that nobody cuts my head off when I say I'm not voting for someone in a public forum.
DesolationUSA- January 12, 2011 at 9:37 pm
@ anyone who is confused.

He is suspended from his paying job at White Bear Lake Area HIGH SCHOOL. He still has his volunteer job at the local ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Apparently people are reading selectively.
Anzus- January 12, 2011 at 8:34 pm
The dude is a fucking chiropractor ('Spinal manipulation is frequently associated with mild to moderate adverse effects, with serious or fatal complications in rare cases. A systematic review determined that the risk of death from manipulations to the neck by far outweighs the benefits.' - basically there is no fucking science behind this bullshit.) He's clearly a gullible moron and in no position to accuse the president of being 'not too bright'. He also needs to articulate his criticism of the healthcare reforms better. What was he honestly hoping to achieve out of this. What an absolute cockhead, he got what he deserved.

He's like a half assed Sonnen.
ZiggysDick- January 12, 2011 at 8:13 pm
I think the buzz around Volkmann's comments reflect on how petty and low our level of national/media discourse is when it comes to politics. Everything is polarized to such an exaggerated degree that intelligent or constructive discussion is either not possible, or simply unmarketable.

I think it reflects poorly on our culture that major media outlets construe some half-hearted political joke uttered backstage at a cagefight as something even remotely significant.

Infotainment gangbang.
DangadaDang- January 12, 2011 at 7:56 pm
Man a guy can't even speak his mind with this shitstorm erupting, next thing you know they'll probably label him a racist. Aren't we in the land of free speech for fucks sake?
