WEC Bantamweight Will Ribeiro in Coma After Motorcycle Wreck

Terrible news from

WEC bantamweight Will Ribeiro is hospitalized and comatose following an early morning motorcycle accident in Rio De Janeiro, according to Ed Soares, the fighter’s manager.
Soares said one of his assistants in Brazil told him Ribeiro was riding as a passenger on the motorcycle and was not wearing a helmet. The street they were riding on was slick due to rain. Ribeiro was rushed to a local hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
“My assistant said that the doctor said for sure that he (Ribeiro) has lost sight in one of his eyes,” Soares said. “He’s still in a coma. After surgery the doctor said there is a 50-50 shot that he will come out of it (survive).”

Ribeiro (10-2) last fought two weeks ago at WEC 37, where he was submitted in the third round by Brian Bowles; before that, he won his WEC debut with a split-decision victory over former bantamweight champ Chase Beebe at WEC 34. Tatame reports that Ribeiro may have lost "encephalic mass" (part of his brain) after the accident. Thoughts, prayers, whatever it is you do…

ruckus is right. As a skate instructor told me once:

"You can scuff your knee, but don't scuff your head".

That's why I think anyone who rides a motorcycle is a total dumbass. Even one accident could end your life, that sucks.

Old, Bald and Irish:
For sure man... even if you're getting on a skate board you should wear a helmet... your quality of life is not worth risking... it doesn't matter what the odds are, if odds exist it COULD happen to you.

You don't want to be lying in a hospital bed while people give prayers to some god that has already punched your ticket.

and I was going to add: take care of yourself.

Best wishes to him and his family. This is horrible news anytime, but worse this time of year.

Keep Ribeiro, his family and friends in your thoughts. I hope he gets better soon.

P.S. - If you get on a bike, PLEASE wear a helmet. Every. Single. Time.

Pennsylvania recently repealed the helmet law and now my state is seeing a 32 percent increase in head injury deaths and a 42 percent increase in head injury-related hospitalizations.

I'm not terribly familiar with Ribeiro outside of the WEC but you hate to hear stories like this. Best wishes. Heal well.

Gotta be careful, man!

Heal up fast and take care of yourself. Best Wishes

Aw, shit. That's awful.
I was actually a fan of Ribeiro, he's got awesome style and I was really hoping he'd put a hurt down on Bowles.

I hope he pulls through.
