What Do You Mean, No One Else Would Fight Gray Maynard?

(Props: MMA Fanhouse)

In this UFC 90 hype video Rich “No Love” Clementi claims that he was the only lightweight willing to step up and fight Gray Maynard, and he did so because he’s the type who “looks for challenges and adversity.” No disrespect to Maynard here, but since when did he become the guy who makes all other UFC lightweights run and hide? What, he holds Frankie Edgar down for three rounds and now we’re supposed to believe that the UFC has trouble finding an opponent for him?

This is the kind of thing that makes you wonder if matchmaker Joe Silva isn’t feeding all the fighters the same lines, like an unimaginative pick-up artist. Either he tells you that they’re offering you this fight because you’re the only one with the balls to take it, or else he says the winner gets a title shot. What’s weird is that those are the same pick-up lines I use. The results so far have been…mixed.

Check out the heavily edited and still kind of lame highlight clips of both Clementi and Maynard during this video. Notice how they include Maynard’s submission-inducing slam of Rob Emerson, but cut it before you have a chance to realize that he knocked himself out in the process. Clever. Also, is it just me, or are most of Clementi’s highlights not really so highlight-y?

Wait, aren't Clementi and Petruzelli the same guy? ... I'm confused.

Also, what's up with the "Why would I fight this guy? What do I have to gain?" shit. Joe Silva tells you who will you fight. End of story.

I get what he says about the highlights being weird. Watch them again,
"I can punch"
*Shows clementi whiffing some punches, and not hurting Sam stout at all*
"I can kick"
*Shows clementi with a weak low kick*
"I can wrestle*
*Shows clementi 'shooting' on Sam Stout; but really just pushes him against the fence*
-He didn't get that takedown by the way.

I too hate Rich Clementi's voice, but I'm excited to see him fight again. Loved watching him work Melvin Guillard, and beating Anthony Johnson is no joke.

And here I was expecting to jump to Gray's defense.... Everybody beat me to it. In addition to his size and not exciting skills, Gray is also in a weird spot in the division. He has not earned a fight with top guys who could beat him ... Joe Daddy, Florian, Sherk, etc; but no-one at his level would do very well. He is stuck between taking a beating and giving one. He doesn't put butts in seats so he can't get the top fights. This will be a good opportunity to see where he really stands in the division. It should be a good test.

Maynard will be problematic for most fighters. Decent enough striking but a high level of wrestling.

In my opinion he's underrated and can/will be a force. He's better then Tyson Griffin anyway (who's had some boring ass fighters recently).

I gotta agree with PayDay and Aaron - Gray is a miserable guy to fight. In fact, I bet Dana will sic him on Huerta.

Clementi's voice is too high. Just like Jared Rollins. That's gross.

What's so difficult to believe that no one would want to fight Gray Maynard? Edgar was the guy holding everyone down for 15 minutes, and now Gray Maynard comes along and is apparently even better at it. He's a nightmare for a lot of fighters.

Do you think MMA fighter LIKE to lose?

Not to mention being taken down, sweated upon, and occasionally hit isn't pleasant either.

Hell yes people are scared to fight him. His size and strength combined with his style (lay and pray) can make other fighters look like garbage. You have to ask, what is the upside to fighting him? If you win, you're supposed to because he's inexperienced, but he can make you look like crap even if you win. If you lose you look like crap while losing to an inexperienced fighter.
