What's Up With GSP's Elbow?

Not to alarm any of you Georges St. Pierre fans, but Rush has been looking rather lumpy lately. Though he's made no mention of it in the run up to his UFC 100 fight against Thiago Alves, GSP has been walking around with a cartoonishly swollen elbow — possibly due to bursitis, an inflammation caused by repetitive movement and trauma that may have previously played a role in Marcus Davis's loss to Mike Swick. Will the injury slow down the welterweight champ, or will GSP use that nasty thing as a club to bash Alves's teeth down his throat?

The grapevine that I listen to has said that it is fluid on the elbow due to a possible MINOR chip either in the elbow or the forearm. It will be drained shortly before the fight and will not cause any major discomfort unless he blocks a kick or lands an elbow to the top of the head in which case expect to see him shake that out and possibly swell up again very fast.

This injury is nothing, i've had it both in my elbow and my knee and was able to play rugby for the better part of an entire year with both. Draining usually isn't needed as the injury wont necessarily get worse. Draining can also lead to infection even over short periods which im sure GSP will be looking to avoid. Regardless, once the adrenaline gets going its not the type of pain that bothers you.

Without Remorse knows more about this than I do, but I had a friend who who had this recently in the same (right) elbow. We do BJJ training together, and he said it was painful.

Bursitis, aka "swellbow". I've had a pretty nasty one like that for years from skateboarding. As stated above, fluid buildup from the bursa sac bursting, usually accompanied with scar tissue buildup which occasionally calcifies when blood clots attach to it. I had that in my hip.

I've had it, although likely due to leaning too much on it in my computer chair... but that sh*t hurts like hell. Caused extreme pain pushing off in exercises like bench and shoulder presses.

i had it in my knee and still could wrestle. doesnt hurt at all. the doctor said i could let it heal over time or drain it. the only problem was draining it would involve going in from the other side of the knee. i dont know why. so i kept it and still finished the season with a winning record

I know he's gotten a ton better but watch Alves against Spencer Fisher and Jon Fitch. It was a few years ago but even though he's made leaps and bounds of progress the dude is going up against GSP. Also I just don't like fucking cheaters the dude gets suspended for taking banned substances, I think it was Spironolactone to help cut weight and or mask the roids, wasn't a fan of him coming in like 6 pounds over to fight Hughes either. Fuck Alves.

As every fighter always says, nobody enters the cage 100% healthy. If it's an issue, GSP has enough tools in the box (and Greg Jackson comes up with good strategies) to compensate. I don't see it affecting the outcome. Unless Alves shows up grossly overweight and sits on it.

Wow to the people who think GSP isn't healthy for this bout just because of his elbow.. Ive had it happen to my elbow and its not fun or attractive but when adrenaline is pumping through your body it doesnt phase you at all. Training, lifting weights can be a bitch but when you are in a fight, your whole body changes and the adrenaline takes over. So no, I dont think it will make a difference whatsoever.
