What’s in Mac Danzig’s Bag?

(Video courtesy of AmoebaMusic)

UFC lightweight Mac Danzig stopped by Amoeba Music in Hollywood, CA to pick up a few items recently and while he was there he filmed a segment of their What’s in my Bag? interview series.

It’s no surprise that the fighter, photographer, philosopher and devout vegan has some eclectic taste in music and films.

Every guy is guilty at one time or another of pretending to like something they don’t to impress the girl they’re dating, but Danzig takes the term "taking one for the team" to a whole new level by faking a genuine love of Grace Jones’ "music."

If you are too young to remember Jones, she was an amazonian-like model-turned avant-garde singer and actress whose popularity peaked in the 80s with film roles such as Zula in Conan the Destroyer and Bond Girl May Day in A View to a Kill

BTW, is it just me or does anyone else think she bears a strong resemblance to Gus Johnson?

At the risk of cockblocking Mac, we’ll just move on and examine  his other musical and film picks.

7L & Estoeric makes sense, considering he has toured with the duo, is a huge hip-hop fan and often walks out to his UFC fights to 7L&E collaborators Jedi Mind Tricks’ and Army of the Pharoahs’ War Ensemble.

Martha Wainright was a bit of a shocker, but we all have our guilty pleasures and my wife has her album on our shared ipod (I swear it’s not mine; Seriously), so whatever.

Props for his penchant for David Lynch movies. I used to hate them, but they’ve grown on me simply because of how bizarre the majority of the films are. I watched Blue Velvet when I was 12 and it confused the shit out of me. It still does, but now I understand and can pay attention more since I don’t have to watch it in the basement with the volume down low with my finger on the stop button of the VCR in case my parents catch me.

I was disappointed to not hear him say he listens to Danzig, but he recovered by mentioning that he’s a Slayer fan, although I can’t help but wonder if listening to titles like Reign in Blood and World Painted Blood leave a vegan like Mac feeling a bit conflicted.

Naglfar.

@wifey - I like a hot steamy piece of meat regularly as well. Nothing to be ashamed of.

@ iDestroy - No, no sir you are not. To answer the question in the header, I'm guessing not nuts.

I've been a fan of Danzig since King of the Cage. I've been a fan of THE Danzig since high school.

Kindling,

I pray that is real.

Sweet Danzig story:

So back in college, my buddy went to visit his girlfriend at her parents' house somewhere in the suburbs. He took the train there (I want to say it was a suburb of Philly or Everytown, NJ) and his gf wasn't getting out of work for a couple of hours, so he decided to hoof it over to her parents' house. As he's walking through this otherwise sleepy suburban town, he hears the far-off din of clanking metal and rock music. He stayed his course and to his surprise, the sounds kept getting louder. He realized his route was going to take him right past all the hubbub. Sure enough, he turns the corner and sees a guy on a front lawn just a few houses down. As he approaches he's treated to the single most awesome thing he's ever seen: Glenn Danzig is set up on his front lawn super-setting bench presses and squats, listening—VERY loudly—to his own music.

The Blackroc CD absolutely slays it. Awesome.

Mac Danzig is from Cleveland. Go Browns.

@ Mike R.

I thought you were getting cranky, but then I realized the guy's name really is Dickface.

Sorry, Dickface.

When I was younger I could get down with some Slayer or Pantera. That stuff is a little too aggressive for me now. I love hip-hop...underground and such. I like alot of indie rock. The Black Keys are probably my favorite group. They really can't do anything wrong. I'm into pretty much anything but death metal and newer country..that twangy shit annoys the hell out of me. I could definitely get down with some Johnny Cash though. Love the blues...I even listen to some jungle and drum and bass.

Remember his season of TUF where he was such a miserable bitch even though he was clearly the best fighter in the house?

The cliffhangers were always "Will Mac Danzig still be on the rag next week? Or will he succumb to eating human feces disguised as a tofu bar?"

I wasn't a fan of Mac's until I found out he listens to Slayer. My feelings towards him have now changed.

Mr_Misanthropy- May 20, 2010 at 11:26 pm
@ Scenic

I've been on an easy listening kick lately too. For me it's been some Destroyer 666, a little Shining, and some old Gorgoroth. You can't go too heavy all the time.

Four out of five cannibals recommend Vegan, it's a fact, go look it up.

I was going to say he probably has a package of bacon, two pounds of veal, and a bucket of foie gras, but I changed my mind and I'm going with a big pink soy-plastic vibrator with natural hemp oil anal lube. What do I win if I'm right?

I watched Danzig's first fight in the UFC and he came out to Jedi Mind Tricks. I was sold. Been a Danzig fan ever since. Not that JMT is my cup of tea any more but anyone who likes or liked them is prolly a pretty cool dude. I made the move to lighter hip hop like Aesop Rock, Sage Francis and The Grouch.

Yesterday was Grace Jones' birthday. A friend mentioned that, now I'm hearing this reference. I assume all the mentions is a sign that she is coming to kill us all.

@Sakuraba3900

Is BlacRok any good?I have every Black keys CD out there but I wasn't too sure about them doing a rap collaboration
CapitalQ- May 20, 2010 at 6:43 pm
@Sakuraba
That Blacrok CD is fucking dope. JMT is pretty cool. Not really my style I listen to music that suits my mood and I'm not often in the mood for angry shit. If I am or need to get pumped I like metal. GWAR and Snot (amazing) come to mind. Love the Martha Wainright. Cool to see a fighter who appreciates a woman with an amazing voice.

Anybody know the name of that song playing at the very end of the video?
Viva Hate- May 20, 2010 at 6:33 pm
I agree, Mac should really listen to Danzig or least show some love to the early Misfits or Samhain.
Sakuraba3900- May 20, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Homeboys got good taste. All in all I think I could hang out with this guy on the daily. I know he didnt mention this on the vid but I bet hes got the Blacrok cd in his car right now.
montanamonster- May 20, 2010 at 6:19 pm
Grace Jones in Conan the Destroyer is kind of sexy creepy in a way. Kind of hot, yet hostile and scary in the high top fade and raccoon tail war-ware.
