Wild Rumor of the Day: Michael Bisping vs. Wanderlei Silva at UFC 105?

Before we get started, let me just point out that has an accuracy rate of about .500 when it comes to breaking news — which is great if you’re batting cleanup, and not so great if you’re an MMA news site. So take the validity of this rumor as somewhere between "Kimo Leopoldo is dead" and "Josh Barnett is innocent." Anyway:

MMABay can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that the main event is all set for the UFC’s next visit to the UK on November 14th as Wolfslair trained middleweight, Michael “The Count” Bisping will take on Brazilian MMA legend, Wanderlei Silva in Manchester, England.
News of the fight was passed along to MMABay by a source at the Wand Fight Team in Las Vegas, Nevada who revealed that the Brazilian would be putting pen to paper very soon after returning from receiving the key to the city in Pensacola, Florida. It will be the first fight of his career to be competed at 185 pounds.

Our first reaction is: No way. The UFC needs to give their U.K. poster boy something closer to a guaranteed rebound for his next fight, and Silva could potentially give Bisping his second-consecutive brain-rattling knockout. But the more we think about the matchup, the more it makes sense. If you’re going to headline an event with Michael Bisping, you’d better make sure his opponent is a big-name draw. (After all, UFC 78 is not exactly looked back on as a fan favorite.) Bisping and Wandy’s stocks have plummeted after their recent defeats, and this match will salvage the career of at least one of them — even if the other guy has to be sacrificed. Plus, Michael Bisping and Quinton Jackson are BFFs, while Wanderlei Silva and Quinton Jackson are mortal enemies, so there’s that little storyline.

We’ll let you know if there’s an official confirmation by either camp. In the meantime, what do you think of the Count vs. the Axe Murderer: Idiotic, or so stupid it just might work?

God I hope this is true... There is really nothing more, as of late, I love than watching Michael "Tito'ed" Bisping get KTFO.

Yes! Sammy Sosa! That's who Wanderlei sounds like now. I couldn't put my finger on it.

I can't wait to watch the countdown show for this abortion. Cockney vs Sammy Sosa English:

Bisping: I sent the trouble and strife down the frog and toad to get a bag of jockeys' whips

Wandy: Fighting been berry berry good to me

I love it... Silva via murder.
Kaibo- July 23, 2009 at 8:40 am
FUCK! I love them both and neither can afford a loss. This is just about as heartbreaking as Nog vs Randy

"The UFC needs to give their U.K. poster boy something closer to a guaranteed rebound for his next fight..."

As much as this statement pisses me off, I wouldn't doubt that it happens. But regardless of how much business sense it makes, I resent the fact that they think they can manage perceptions by tailoring the fights to a more popular win/loss record and this is exactly why I'd be all for a better, more structured ranking system. If Bisping is due to get his head knocked off again, so be it. But if they feed him someone he's sure to knock around, all it does is milk another PPV and water down the card. And it seems some of the logical matchups didn't or won't happen this year because of the timing of their last fights [not just Bisping and Wandy] I'm usually a fan of Joe Silva's work, but I don't care to see unnecessary matchups just to give Bisping a win with the hopes of convincing me he's not the turd I already know he is.

Let's see the best fights. I don't distinguish between Kimbo, Bisping, Fedor, or anyone else when it comes to handing them easy fights to bolster popularity. I think that sucks in general.

Wandy!! KILL Bisping!!

That KO from Hendo was just a warm-up, Bisping's brain better get ready to be turned to mush.
agentsmith- July 23, 2009 at 8:23 am
I think the only question is will Bisping get KTFO'd more or less brutally than Jardine.
VegasBJJ- July 23, 2009 at 8:23 am
I feel sorry for Bisping. Wait, no I don't... he's a bitch and Wandy is going to destroy him. (haha)
mayhem- July 23, 2009 at 8:21 am
Damn who did Bisping piss off??? First he gets KTFO by Hendo and now he is looking at getting KTFO again?? If I was him I would start thinking about some rubber diapers. He is going to need them real soon.

I think Joe Silva might be pissed off at Bisping, if this is true. Bear with me.

I mean, let's take a look at Bisping here: he's a striker who's not known for one-punch KO power, but can do damage with his fists and legs. He's a former 205-lb fighter who moved down to middleweight. He says he has wrestling, but it's not really something he goes after, it's more used to keep fights standing.

Sound familiar? Yeah, exactly -- he's basically a poor man's version of Rich Franklin. And when Joe Silva starts matching Bisping up with guys who were evenly matched with Franklin, it's not hard to figure out what's going to happen.

This is like that time CP sacrificed that pretty journalist girl to Rampage except Im not sure the count will take it as well.
Fedor vs. Bas- July 23, 2009 at 8:09 am
I like it. I think they both need a win, and are both potentially dangerous. This determines which one is possibly a contender. God I hope Wandi knocks the count out for a second time in a row.

Two Knock Outs. AH AH
Jeffro- July 23, 2009 at 8:05 am
If forgot to mention. The fight should go on at 195.
Jeffro- July 23, 2009 at 8:03 am
This was the fight I was praying for. Wand will eat his lunch. Then, hopefully Bisping will fade away into obscurity.
El Famous Burrito- July 23, 2009 at 8:00 am
This is great matchmaking. It will be a huge event for British MMA fans. it will sell out the arena and generate tons of PPV buys. At the end of the day, the outcome of the fight won't matter so much. If Bisping wins, the crowd goes berzerk, if Wanderlei wins, well, Wanderlei needs a win pretty bad and another Bisping KO would sit quite well with me.

I love it. I'm stoked.
PHELPS- July 23, 2009 at 7:58 am
Also a bad matchup for bisping. Its hard to be a patient weak throwing striker with wanderlei, you need to be able to bang with him or he's just going to eat your kids. wandy will back bisping into the cage destroy him.
rickson by armbar- July 23, 2009 at 7:56 am
What the UFC should so is kill a member of Bisping's family and put the blame on him by planting some evidence in his garden (I suggest an oak). Then the main event should be Bisping VS His grandmothers uncle
Geriatric Peon- July 23, 2009 at 7:53 am
I think we are going to see another Wandy/Jardine like rape choke and that makes me very happy.
PHELPS- July 23, 2009 at 7:50 am
good matchup. also weird that mmabay has direct ties to wolfslair and is confirming from wands camp. Shouldn't they have heard from bisping himself. I hope wandy takes mikeys head off
LoneWolf- July 23, 2009 at 7:49 am
Yes this is Awesome, I would def pay to see Bisping get KO *2!!
newdeal- July 23, 2009 at 7:48 am
This may be the first death in the octagon. I don't know if bisping could handle another knockout like the one hendo gave him
