Win an iPod Touch in the First MMA FightPicker Prize Pools!

Happy hump-day, Potato Nation. We have a couple of important MMA FightPicker-related announcements to make this morning. First off, FightPicker now has a fan page on Facebook, where you can get updates on the game, chat with other players, and make your weekly picks. Do us a solid and become a fan, okay?
 
Secondly, and more importantly: The first FightPicker prize pools are now open for business! If you go to the Open Pools page you’ll see three new pool categories at the top. Here’s how they’re set up…

iPod Touch Pool Unlimited: Buy-in is 250 PotatoChips. There is no player limit to the pool, so your odds of winning decrease with every new person that enters. The winner of the pool* will take home an iPod Touch. (Street value: $199)
iPod Touch Pool 25: Buy-in is 500 PotatoChips**, but your odds of winning are greater because we’re capping the entries at 25 players. Once this pool fills up, we’ll start another 25-person pool, repeating as necessary. The winner of each 25-person pool will score an iPod Touch.
iPod Touch Pool 10: Buy-in is 1,200 PotatoChips; entries are capped at 10 players, so your odds of winning are pretty damn favorable. Once this pool fills up, we’ll start another 10-person pool. The winner of each 10-person pool will score an iPod Touch.

* To prevent ties, we’ve added a tie-breaker question to these pools, so make sure to answer it if you enter one of them. If there’s still a tie even after the tie-breaker question is factored in, the prize will go the first-place-scorer who entered the pool earliest.

** By now, some of you are wondering how the hell you can enter these pools with your miserable stake of 34 PotatoChips or whatever you have left at this point. Well, if you really want an iPod Touch and you feel confident in your picking abilities, you can purchase chips here. Throw in a few bucks (which supports the site, by the way) and you’ll be good to go. Or, spend the day filling out surveys, whichever’s easier.

I know its early and you guys are still working out the bugs, i think everything is great but the scoring system need a little fine tuning, i've been on this since the start like alot of people im sure and this is my fav mma site, you guys do a great job. Now fix that damn scoring system!!!

 @mthomas trust us, we tried that before, and it took us another week before we found them in Tijuana...there was a lucha libre mask, a donkey, a guy dressed as Frodo, and a Callaway X series pitching wedge involved is all I'm going to say.  it was only funny in hindsight.@budsellers good point r.e. byline.  and yes, just to be clear, it was ben fowlkes who lost to his wife.  in game where you predict the outcomes of MMA matches.  as in the sport that he writes about. not to belabor the point.

thanks for the response mike. since it seems this post has the attention of the website staff, here is some more feedback(off-topic)... i would like to see a *posted by* for every post. sometimes if ben or ben does not write a post, we see it is from elias or someone else, but we are rarely told which ben is writing which post. today, those of us reading the comments learned which ben is losing to his wife in fightpicker. i assume the other ben would want everyone to know that.

@mthomas - i nominate that last comment for a t-shirt!

@Mike: I don't think the FightPicker makes the Bens any LESS funny. I do, however, think that a 3-day junk food and hard drug bender could make 'em MORE funny...

@budsellers - i posted my reply before I saw yours (I took too long writing it). Anyway, these are great suggestions!  We will definitely be looking into the leaderboards and figuring out ways to make em better and more useful to the community...keep the feedback coming!

 @MadDizzle66 et alTo date, we've focused the game on tracking who's won pools, and the points have been a way to determine winners within the pools only.  I can see the value in tracking total points over time, as that would show consistency, especially if some fool won a big pool and a ton of chips cause GSP slipped, split his wig on the mat and lost a match, while you've been making solid picks week in and week out. We're constantly trying to improve the game, and hopefully for the folks who have been playing since the start, you've seen improvements based on your feedback, so keep the feedback coming.  That said, not all changes can be done overnight, but rest assured if you guys provide feedback in the comments or in the forums, we read them and they are part of our ongoing discussions for how to improve the product.@mthomas I hope FightPicker isn't making the Ben's any less funny.  But if Fowlkes keeps losing to his wife, all bets are off.@fightfan Yes, we do need to make money to pay our bills, but we also launched this because we think it's a cool thing that's not really been done for MMA yet. Fantasy sports in general has been an amazing way for traditional sports to keep their fans engaged, and we think more stuff like this will only help promote the sport and give fans of the sport another outlet and way to enjoy MMA.  Finally, we really are serious about making sure the offers are clean.  We had our team go through and screen the offers prior to launch.  That said, if you see suspicious offers, please email us at support@cagepotato.com and we'll verify and if they are indeed scammy, we'll have them removed immediately.  We want to provide offers as an alternate to paying by credit card etc., but don't want to do that at the expense of our community.hugs, kisses, and rear naked chokeholds,mike

it seems that more than most of us agree that the *number of pools won* and the *number of chips won* is not relevant for finding the best fightpicker among us. that is the point right cp? this is not supposed to be a poker table and since you can increase your chance of being on that leaderboard by entering more contests after purchasing chips or completing surveys, those results are bunk.

*total points won*, as suggested my maddizzle666, is equally useless because with sufficient time and energy spent collecting chips, a fightpicker can enter an unlimited number of pools per week and collect points from all of them. even if this fightpicker were to use the exact same picks in every pool(doubtful) which resulted in 1st, 2nd or 3rd in only a small percentage of those pools, his cumulative number of points scored, and possibly chips won as well, would dwarf that of a fightpicker who entered only 3 or 4 pools a month with wins and/or perfecta scores in more than 50% of them.

clearly, in this example, the fightpicker who enters less contest, but wins and/or receives perfecta scores in more than 50% of his pools is the better fightpicker and i assume maddizzle666 could agree with that.

i am saying that any leaderboard that strictly tracks a total number of any of these measurables turns this game into a contest of who is richest and not who is best...

i have 4 suggestions to replace the current leaderboards:
an *average of chips win per pool*
an *average of points won per pool*
% ratio for *number of pools won to number of pools entered*
% ratio for *number of perfectas scored to number of pools entered*

if you use these suggestions, please hook me up with some chips instead of a t-shirt. ;)

The point of this is plain and simple......

Additional income for Break media/cagepotato. Not against people making a living. I am just strugglign econmically and cant afford to spend money on things like this. I am all for it. but just like F****linker, they are making the loyal readers supplement their income. I could see if the prizes were CASH....those Ipods are ok, but probably are promotional gifts to break media/cagepotato for no charge

so whats the point of having points then, just say 1st, 2nd and 3rd, dont do points then, i think it would be alot better if the leader was the guy with the most points not chips cause you have to spend chips to play, its constantaly going up and down, when i win chips i turn right around and spend them to play more pools, it just makes alot more since to have the point leader then chip leader, chips should be for playing and the points you win should determine the overall leader.

The points are for each pool only. Those are what determines the winner of the pool. They have no significance outside of each individual pool.

So when i finish 7th and get 160 points and no chips, whats the point of giving out those points then, why not just first, second and third get chips and everybody get nothing. Thats why im confused, overall i have 1210 points, curious where i stand with everybody else.

yes i suppose, but i think it would be nice to have a point standing as well cause, you win chips then you spent them to get in more pools, like if i win 60 chips i spent all them to get in multiple pools then i have 0 chips, so if i finish second or third a bunch and get alot of points but harldy any chips im nowhere in the standings, but a guy who wins one pool and finishes 27th in all the other ones is in first place, it just seems not fair for the guys who are doing good constintaly but not getting first. Just a point standing is all im asking about, that would be nice to see who doing the best overall thats all.

Somehow I have the feeling that most people who come here are not the stereotypical meat heads that you see in the crowd at the bigger mma events, so most of us should not fall for these scams. And if you do... you probably where hit with an illegal spinning backfist too often.

I do enjoy the fightpicker a lot and I even won bragging rights once!

The leaderboard is only for people who win potatochips in pools (not from surveys or from purchasing them) and for most pools won.

We are planning on implementing something like a "top 100" leaderboard to see where the top players stand. Is this what you are referring to?

yeah, for those of us who dont fall victim to the scam ass surveys and play straight up, we get nothing in return, we score points like a mo'fo but have no idea where we stand overall, the leader is some dude who filled out a 1000 chip survey and entered 40 pools and won a couple of them. Cagepotato, please answer this or address this in some way.

I e-mailed you a response to this question yesterday.

Points are used only in individual pools to determine who is 1st 2nd and 3rd. If you get in the top 3, you are rewarded with potato chips. We then base the leader board on who is in the lead with potato chips that have been won (not purchased) and pools won. Let me know if that makes sense or if you still have questions.

I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy, but am I the only one on here who doesn't really care about the FightPicker and hasn't even signed up? I like CP for the funny articles and even funnier commentary. I don't really care about bragging rights. Besides, part of what I like about MMA is that it's so unpredictable (Sonnen over Marquardt anyone?). And there is no way, I'm gonna fill out these scammy surveys...I thought I knew you Bens. I TRUSTED YOU!!!

i hate te fact that you guys have teamed up with the scheisters that do these online survey/ signup for something useless bits. These people that do these prey on the fact that you like the sites idea soooo much that you'll actually sign up for their useless shit just for the opportunity to win something thats infinitely less valuable thatn the services provided. I hate these random ad/ survey things and if it werent for the fact that i love The Bens' dry witty humor, i would probably find another site for my MMA fix altogether due to this.

Guys, if you see surveys you think are scammy, please let us know. There's a thread in the forums for reporting them. We've gone through them pretty exhaustively trying to get rid of any that seem shady, but new ones are added all the time. We absolutely don't want you guys subjected to any scammy deals.

or you can use firefox and download an add on that BLOCKS teh site that runs these surveys. I do it on a movie site. ADbock plus is what it is called. Dont know if that will help???
