‘WTF?’ of the Day: Cage Potato Makes Front Page News on FX’s ‘Lights Out’

On this week’s episode of FX’s Lights Out, a muck-raking sports reporter catches wind that the show’s protagonist — former boxing champ Patrick “Lights” Leary — is supporting his career comeback with some MMA bouts on the side. That reporter must also be a big fan of our site, because he titles his story “LIGHTS LEARY CAGE POTATO?” Yep, there it is on page one of the Bergen Star sports section, held up by the show’s requisite slimy boxing promoter, Barry Word.

I have to say, it’s a proud moment to have the name of this website pronounced with such disdain by Reg E. Cathey, an actor who I’ve long been a fan of, thanks to his work on The Wire and Pootie Tang. (That being said, we’re still going to sue FX for royalties. Fair is fair.) Lights Out is a pretty good show overall, but the MMA references are pretty weak. Like in the episode when the one boxer has 2 weeks to lose 8 lbs, so they put him on meth... METH. and then said that "Thats what all the MMA guys do" Oh, you mean the MMA guys that are mostly wrestlers who could cut 8 lbs no problem in a day or 2?

Terriers > Lights Out. FX pissed me off when they cancelled Terriers and put on Lights out. I was actually excited for Lights out but after the first two episodes being god aweful I just had to walk away.

If Lights Out has taught us anything, it's that Bas Rutten is a shockingly competent actor.

The MMA references are pretty hit and miss though, often comically so. As Spicymeatball points out, Leary has a stellar ground game considering he has zero MMA experience. But come on, fake fighting is awesome no matter how badly it butchers our sport. This could have been one of those dramas with no or very little fake fighting, but there's bit a bout of some sort in every episode just about.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the Bas Rutten fight. That armbar was IN, and the choke escape was horribly unrealistic. I do like the show thuogh. Why didn't Bas have a little more input into how the fight scene played out?

I mean as much shit as i give you guys on the occassional dumb article.. this is a pretty fucking awesome site. I wouldn't keep coming back if it wasn't. I love anything that doesn't take itself too seriously and just doesn't give a shit. I made the switch from mmajunkie which censors anything from fighter bashing to cursing, and that's just no fun. Cagepotato is the shit. I have to tip my hat to anyone that inserts my name into a craigslist ad for a straight mma fighter wanting a guy friend to have masterbation contests with..

I can't believe it took you guys this long to find it. The funnier part is who he fought to get into the paper. He fought Bas Rutten in an MMA bout (Bas was playing some loan shark's muscle). And in one round Leary the boxer who's never done MMA escaped a Bas Rutten Armbar and rear naked choke, got kicked in the face and then came back to knock him out.
