Yeah, Cheick Kongo Has a Bit of a Size Advantage Over Cain Velasquez

For all our talk about how far superior Cain Velasquez‘s wrestling is and how that might make all the difference in his fight with Cheick Kongo at UFC 99, it’s worth noting that Kongo is one big dude, and that often tends to help in fights, especially in the heavyweight division.  I mean, just look at the success of Tim Sylvia, such as it is/was.  That wasn’t all pure talent and genius career moves, people.  When it comes to keeping Velasquez at a distance and avoiding the takedown, it also helps that Kongo has the wingspan of a freaking condor.  Is it possible Kongo could just stay on the outside and use a combination of jabs and groin kicks to take Velasquez out of his game?

Yea dummys dont try and switch up the measurements. Stick with the inches and pounds like Cheeto said.

The weight advantage that Cain has is pure fat lol. You guys are idiots thinking that will make the difference. The size and reach of Kongo actually means something.

Although I do agree that if the fight goes to the ground then Cain has a better shot at winning.

Size won't matter when they are both on the ground. Kongo's takedown defense and grappling in general have been exposed by Heath Herring and Carmello Marreiro. Good fight for Velasquez.

Kongo is just taller, not bigger.

At UFC 97 against Al Turk, Kongo weighed 232.
At UFN against Dejan Stojnic, Velasquez weighed 239.

So Velasquez is half a ston heavier than Kongo, so it could be argued Velasquez is 'bigger'

I think Kongo takes this. My first reaction when I saw the betting lines was "Kongo is the UNDERdog?" Cain is a hot prospect and all that but calling him the favorite against a guy like Kongo seems like a mistake. Cain has alot going for him, but Kongo is basically the 3rd best heavyweight in the UFC, and he's not some chump that's gonna pad Cain's record. I wouldn't miss this fight for the world, it's gonna come to slugging - early. Cain could very well end up on the winning side of that but I just think Kongo has the experience to win the fight we're gonna see.

Kongo by TKO, rd. 2. Valesquez could also finish it in the first if he's really the phenom he's been touted as.

yea, brotha.. made a Fedor and he is kicking teh ass of the heavyweight division with ease(went with judo and boxing for my skill sets, estimating as those are the closest to sambo)... next up is a Sakuraba to destroy the middleweight and welterweight divisions - without the Madden-like ability for the announcers to say your name in-game, I dont find any reason to play as myself.. tho, Michael Buffer annnouncing your personal name as you fight is probably the greatest reason why EA should take the UFC franchise from THQ once they file ch11...

I dont think Cheick will stand a chance... Fedor beat him in my Undisputed, and hes only 6ft... plus Fedor had a much tougher time with Velasquez on his run to the belt anyways, so Im calling this for Velasquez on account of AI...

I think Kongo will take this. Despite the superior wrestling that Cain has, I dont think his standup is on the same level as Kongo's. So yea, Kongo by KO.

Anybody know what the D:SF sponsor on the banner is? It could be deutsches sportfernsehen which is a 24 hour channel that broadcasts sports but I'm doubting thats it.

Herring owned Kongo on the ground. Is it safe to say that Cain is a better wrestler than Heath? I do think this is a gi-normous step up in competition for Velasquez. Either way, this fight will shape up the scene for the HW division enormously. A win for either fighter puts them near or at the top for contention, and a loss by either won't hurt them in the standings too badly (compared to Arlovski last weekend).

I'm leaning toward Kongo right now, but my Strikeforce picks sucked rotten ass last weekend so ignore me.

I think Kongo would do good in k-1. He should give up MMA he's like a fish out of water on the ground, i don't see him beating anyone worth a shit that doesn't stand and strike with him.

I'M NOT GOING TO UNDERESTIMATE CANE AT ALL. THE MAN IS VERY GOOD, AND HAS ALL NICE FINISHES THAT I KNOW OF. KONGO DOES NOT HAVE VERY MANY IMPRESSIVE FIGHTS IN MY OPINION. ITS HIS SIZE THAT HAS BEEN WINNING FIGHTS FOR HIM WHICH WAS ALOT LIKE TIM SYLVIA UNTILL PEOPLE FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW TO BEAT HIS SIZE, AND THEN HE WAS CUT FROM THE BIG TIME (UFC) CAUSE HE WAS GETTING HIS ASS KICKED EVERYTIME. I BELIEVE THAT CAIN WILL BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF KONGO WITH EASE. I GIVE IT SOMEWHERE IN THE 2ND ROUND, AND CAIN WILL FINISH HIM. I'M ABOUT DUE FOR A GOOD CALL BECAUSE SO FAR I DON'T HAVE A VERY GOOD RECORD AS FAR AS PREDICTIONS GO HERE ON CP. YEP ITS GONNA BE CAIN ALL THE WAY ON THIS ONE.

I think they should implement some type of "No Glasses" rule for the stare-downs. Size is totally disregarded by "hey, this fucker got glasses on." Has as much intensity as a lazy poop.
