Kimbo Slice to Knock Out Ken Shamrock on CBS
Ken Shamrock will be the fourth man to face Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson when the two icons clash at EliteXC’s third installment of "Saturday Night Fights" Oct. 4 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. The headlining bout will anchor a live broadcast on CBS. Sherdog.com confirmed the bout’s signing with multiple parties aware of the fight, while a press release is expected to circulate later today with the news. The 44-year-old Shamrock (26-13-2) beat out fellow candidates Sean Gannon and Brett Rogers, who called out Slice in May, for the coveted slot.
[*shakes head*] Okay. So first off, Ken Shamrock has lost his last five fights by first-round KO/TKO. He has a tendency to get grazed on the chin, drop to the mat with his eyes rolled up in his head, and then immediately pop up to complain when the ref stops the fight. Maybe it's just bad luck. Maybe he's more susceptible to flash knockouts than most all MMA fighters. Whatever the case, he shouldn't be headlining a network television fight card. Slice vs. Rogers would be a contest that MMA fans would actually want to watch. The only question we'll have after Slice vs. Shamrock is, will the World's Most Dangerous Man finally retire after this one?
It's as good a time as any to bring up this fun fact: Kimbo's second EliteXC opponent, Tank Abbott, had lost seven of his past eight fights before stepping into the cage at "Street Certified" in February. James Thompson had lost six of his last eight when he faced Kimbo at "Primetime." Now, perhaps because Thompson gave Slice more problems than EliteXC had expected, they're giving him Shamrock, who like Tank, has also lost seven of his last eight. These guys are beyond "jobbers" — they're woefully unsuccessful.
I've never thought that Kimbo Slice is bad for the sport of MMA, but EliteXC's matchmaking certainly is. Obviously, the matchup is geared more to casual fans — "casual" meaning that they understand the concept of two dudes punching each other, and may have heard of the UFC — and EliteXC certainly needs big ratings on CBS in October. Still, I'm not convinced that a squash match featuring a guy whose prime is 14 years behind him is going to hook repeat business. With their landmark network television deal, EliteXC had the opportunity to spread the gospel of MMA to the unaware, and they're squandering it under the assumption that a flashy knockout from Kimbo Slice will save their sinking ship. We'll see if it does.
As a consolation prize, Brett Rogers — the man who should be facing Kimbo in October — will face the winner of Slice/Shamrock "sometime in the future." EliteXC could be saving the Rogers/Slice grudge match for a pay-per-view show early next year. Meanwhile, CBS is stuck with another freak show.

Here's the irony that's apparently lost on EliteXC..."casual fans" don't know who the fuck Ken Shamrock is. You have to be a fan of the sport to know about Shamrock's history, the fact that he's a pioneer, etc. If ratings are the priority, they'd be better off booking Kimbo against another Lesnar-esque pro wrestler like Kurt Angle.

But if he wants to be taken seroiusly in this sport, he's gotta do like Lessner and take some real competition.
I like Kimbo, but in the long run, this has the potential to backfire on his career in MMA. He'll just be known for freakshows and punching over-their-prime cans.
Flat out, Kimbo can be better than this. What's the big deal; take a loss. Fight a genuine challenger and prove yourself while you learn something. It hasn't hurt Brock's career...
Note to EliteXC: Kimbo is NOT Fedor. It's OK if he loses a couple of fights. Everybody does.

Well we can't fault Kimbo for any of this, he's basically riding a payday wave. Shamrock at least has the skills to put Kimbo away, but he's getting old. It doesn't matter really, since well... yeah. I don't think EliteXC has a long lifetime left. UFC is too dominant, and has assured staying power thanks to a long schedule of real fights and a large pool of good fighters to choose from.
Maud, you might think you're the majority because you just started waching MMA when Lesnar came to the UFC, but the UFC itself it run by real fight fans, for real fight fans. It's not JUST about dollars.
UFC has put on a solid product for 5+ years now and has been rewarded financially by putting on serious fights. EliteXC's Kimbo fights are edging closer to pro wrestling than anything else. I'll be sad the day that fake MMA bouts start showing up on TV, but I'm sure people like Maud will love the "action".
Nonetheless, real MMA is outselling ridiculo-MMA by... I dunno, 10-1? 20-1? Globally, 100-1?

I dont think you guys are giving enough credit to Kimbo. Don't make assumptions about his ground game. He has had a lot of time to train now and with the few fights he had, he just might surprise you. Shamrock is getting old no question but he still has some fight in him. Sure, in his past 8 fights he has 6 losses, but they arent to no-namers. The people that beat him are Tito Ortiz (three times), Rich Franklin, Don Frye (back in 2002 when Frye was more of a fighter), Sakuraba, and Robert Berry. With that said, this isn't going to be a cake-walk for Kimbo, but I do expect him to win nonetheless.
You guys all sound like elitests, ragging on Kimbo like its the cool thing to do. Take it for what it is...an exciting fighter to watch. Look at it this way. 2 great fighters make a great fight, but 2 mediocre fighters can also make a great fight. I would rather him fight a ken shamrock than a fedor, because the fight will be closer, and more interesting in the long run.

Let us not forget how easily Bas Rutten (Kimbo's trainer) was submitted via kneebar the last time he fought Ken. I'm interested to see how this one turns out.
