Evan Tanner Found Dead in California Desert

Former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner has been found dead in the Palo Verde mountain area of the southern California desert. The news was confirmed with Tanner's manager, John Hayner, who said he learned just an hour ago that the body found was indeed Tanner. He was thirty-seven years old.

"He was in a real positive state of mind, he wasn't having any drinking problems or any of those types of problems. He was really feeling good about his life," Hayner told CagePotato.com.

Hayner said that Tanner had gone into the desert on a motorcycle expedition and had run out of gas. Tanner was attempting to walk out of the desert, Hayner said, but apparently didn't realize how far away from civilization he was and died of exposure in the triple-digit heat. Tanner's empty campsite was spotted Sunday, and an aerial search located his body earlier this afternoon.

A post written by Tanner on his Spike TV blog told of his planning for the trip, and emphasized his desire to bring only essentials in his escape to the solitude of the desert:

I've been gathering my gear for this adventure for over a month, not a long time by most standards, but far too long for my impatient nature. Being a minimalist by nature, wanting to carry only the essentials, and being extremely particular, it has been a little difficult to find just the right equipment. I plan on going so deep into the desert, that any failure of my equipment, could cost me my life. I've been doing a great deal of research and study. I want to know all I can about where I'm going, and I want to make sure I have the best equipment.

Hayner told of a man who "marched to a beat only he could hear," but maintained a positive outlook on life.

"Here was a famous UFC fighter who didn't have enough food to eat at times. I'd call him just to make sure he had food in his fridge, but he never let it get him down. Starting over was kind of a theme in his life. He hardly ever lived in the same place more than six months," Hayner said. "He moved out to Vegas and then found it too shallow for him, so he moved out to Oceanside and had a great place, he was learning to surf, and he was really enjoying his day-to-day life."

Evan was truly a beautiful soul. Rest in Peace.

This just about killed my day, I'm totally flabbergasted.

I can't believe this is true. Evan has been one of my favorite righters from the beginning. May he finally find peace.

God Bless Evan Tanner

I thought this was some sort of cruel joke when I read the title but fuck. Evan Tanner was one of the better people in the sport, shame and true sadness to see him go.

This Is Crazy!! The UFC has lost one of the greats today....my thoughts and prayers are with his family...

R.I.P Tanner

Weird to go one CP post without any clever remarks or jokes..
What a shame.

Weird to go one CP post without any clever remarks or jokes..
What a shame. (About Tanner I mean)

Terrible news. He will be missed.

Whoa! I can't....damn! This is hard to swallow. My thoughts, prayers and heart go out to his friends and family. Evan was a true competitor, whether he was fighting the best in the Octagon or his personal demons outside the cage. I'm really sorry to see him go this way. Very tragic.

R.I.P

Evan Tanner was a great ambassador of this sport. He was a real fighter in and out of the octagon and he cared deeply for his fans. He will truly be missed.

wow...i'm out a words...always liked him as a fighter, always hoped he'd come back to his greatness...this is really sad

R.I.P. Evan...

I got to meet Evan once and he was a very cool and very deep person. I was literally just some dude off the street to him, but he took the time to talk about the fight biz, training philosophies, and even where I grew up and laugh about how much we both hated Las Vegas.

It was terrible to watch him fall on hard times as a fighter and in his personal life and I always was pulling for him to get it together and pull off a great string of wins again.

I'm not good on sentiment. All I can say is I hope he finds that peace for which he always searched, and this really really sucks for the rest of us.

Sorry Evan.

---RIP EVAN TANNER UFC CHAMP---

Wow, I thought this was a cruel joke for a moment when I read the headline...

I always enjoyed Tanner and I agree he was a great ambassador for the sport. I wish someone had just slapped the crazy out of him because he seemed like an excellent human being and I always enjoyed watching him in the ring.

That is really a sad waste of a good person...

This is strange, unexpected, and truly, very sad. Evan Tanner was a great, and a pioneer and future Hall of Fame'r.

First I find out my girlfriend has been cheating on me and now this? when it rains it pours fellas i'm telling you...

Damn.

Truly a sad happening. Like everyone else, it seems, I really liked this guy - as a fighter and a person.
Be careful out there, folks. None of us are getting out of here alive. Just try to make it as far as you can.

Rest in peace Evan Tanner

GRANT

Dammit sunn!!!

R.I.P. ✌

I was in shock when I read this. My prayers are for Evan's family and friends. I rooted for him each time he was in the octagon.

RIP Evan

I hate to see anyone die, but allow me to be the first to say, perhaps if he had stayed on the road letting his fans buy him a burger, instead of going into a desert, he might still be alive.
Perhaps that "bad thing inside him" caused him to be stupid, who knows.
Sounds mean I know, but I think Tanner wasn't right in the head......and now sadly he is dead.

I am speechless. RIP warrior Evan Tanner.

UFC fan, I don't think your being mean. I sort of understand you. Shouldn't he have check his MPG versus his trip milage? He said he was studying for his trip, and he knew that a small miscalculation or equipment malfunction may have cost him his life, and which did. I just don't understand how he didn't think about his gas, or I don't know. It's none of my business, but I just wanted to get that off my mind. Although, I might get bashed now. :(

Jesus, I guess this can serve as a lesson to all of us: when going out on your own into the vast American desert in search of enlightenment, don't forget to not be retarded. Better luck next time, winner.

its a sad day in MMA history...u will be missed

My friends and I were talking about it, and maybe a gas station was unexpectedly closed or something.

R.I.P.

Maybe he was cruising a little faster than he calculated with his MPG. Serves a lesson to all of us drive slower save gas. Let go of the gas sooner and slow down you'll save your brakes too. Taking off slower rather than dumping all your gas to still move like a turtle for a few moments also saves the tank.

Anyways does this remind anyone of the story of Chris McCandless? The main character in the book "Into the Wild" which explores another true story of a similar kind of person who met a similar demise. Maybe you saw the movie which was supposed to be as heart moving as the book.

Honestly I can't see myself as a minimalist like that, but I have similar tendencies to just take off on solo adventures without inviting anyone or solo because no one else can or wants to go. It's just something you got to do because it's for yourself, and it really breaks the boredom. However, I still firmly believe in the more the merrier.

Anyways back to Tanner, I honestly became a fan too late into the sport to see the days when he was in his prime, but he was a champion. So that alone deserves my respect.

RIP - Sounds like he fought hard during his final battle, but it was a losing fight, and one he can't recover from.

PS - How does one barely keep enough food to feed themselves, yet maintain such an impressive physique (a fighter's physique)? Working out only gets you so far, a person's diet is equally important.

I'm shocked, just couldnt believe it when i first read the header.

one of my fave fighters, gotta love his knees in the clinch :(

R.I.P.

RIP tanner. you're the fucking man

What a tragedy. I met Evan at UFC 84 in Las Vegas. A really nice guy. He will be missed. R.I.P. Evan.

I admired Evan from his earliest days in the UFC. A true warrior, no fear, no complaints, ever. But, it was evident that he had demons inside him. I think it will bear out that he planned this death. He was a survivor. He had lived everywhere, in all kinds of conditions. "Run out of gas"???? Not likely. Once again, I admire Evan. He chose the place, the time, and the method. There won't be a man like him seen again in this generation.

Evan was always one of my favourite fighters. Every day I would check his blog; you could tell his was a unique mind.

This is a real shame.

Maybe he didn't figure in how much gas would evaporate in days of triple digit heat.
This really sucks, R.I.P.

R.I.P. Evan

That is a right shitter.
R.I.P. Evan.

MMA just suffered a great loss.

evan tanner he is the greatest he will be missed god bless

To the fans of evan i too am at aloss for words, but he will be on a bigger fight ticket with god as his trainer now.R.I.P. To the losers who do not dream or take a chance, but feel bashing the life of someone else is better, you are truly stupid and without a real thought in your pea brains.I would only hope you die in a puddle of your own vommit and shit.

my deepest condolences go out to all those that knew, loved and watched him...RIP Evan

God bless your soul Mr. Tanner.

At first I thought; No way...
Then it sunked in...
I felt like he was like my dad once was, calm but fair and damn if someone did him wrong...
Al of a sudden my eyes got watery...

Its sad to know hes gone. Even though I heard this the day after...

R.I.P Tanner, you will be missed.

Rest in Peace, Evan. You were truly loved and admired from those who knew you "before you were famous". You were a good man with a heart of gold. You will be missed.

Rest in peace Evan. Our harts and prayers go out u and u r family.

you will be missed Evan RIP
