Alexander Gustafsson Suffers Facial Cut in Training, UFC on FUEL 9 Headliner in Jeopardy

(Well, technically it *was* a training injury. Alexander was trying to train his dog to dance in a circle, and the dog clawed the shit out of his face. / Photo via AlexTheMauler)

As first reported yesterday by the Swedish news outlet SVT, UFC light-heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson suffered a gash in his eyebrow while sparring, which could lead to the cancellation of his UFC on FUEL 9 headlining bout against Gegard Mousasi this coming Saturday. A follow-up report from MMAnytt confirmed with the Swedish MMA Association that it will take several weeks before the injury heals up, and that Gustafsson won’t be medically approved for the fight “with 99% certainty.”

If Gustafsson indeed has to withdraw from his UFC on FUEL 9 match on short notice, it would be devastating, both for the event — which was being carried to a large extent by Gustafsson — and for Alexander himself, who was likely just one more impressive performance away from clinching a light-heavyweight title shot.

However, the fight hasn’t been formally canceled yet. As UFC president Dana White explained in a text message to Ariel Helwani, “The [Swedish Mixed Martial Arts Federation] has not said he can’t fight, and he wants to fight.”

We’ll update you if anything changes. In the meantime, you can bet that the UFC is turning over every rock to find a big-name backup opponent for Mousasi, because if the main event is switched to Ross Pearson vs. Ryan Couture at the last minute, you really couldn’t blame the Swedes for rioting.

If you are going to nominate a return of Tito to fight Mousasi, I will counter with a Rampage "comeback." That being said, this really is the situation that the company man, Rich Franklin, has been known to step in and bail out the UFC. Still, I'd rather see Wandy or even Brian Stann (albeit that would make 3 losses in a row for Stann if he were to fight Gus).

I don't know, man. All I know is CP better get some boots on the ground in Sweden or I'm more done with this site than when Mike Russel ... No just kidding - nothing is worse than that.

Any other ideas besides Wand? I thought Rick Franklin, but he just got killed by Chong Li at MW. Forest is apparently out with a knee injury. Beyond that, everyone else at 205 is booked (e.g. Bones/Chael, Nog/Shogun, Shad/Hendo) in matchups that aren't worth destroying to save a shitty Fuel card.

Just wanna throw this out there, and you can catch it, or throw it back...Tito comes out of retirement? Let me tell you how you're feelin right now buddy.

How is this thread dead? WTF is going on with Gus? I hear stitches but it's all scuttlebutt. What's worse - Swedish officials allowing the bout and then Sassy winning by opening cut OR event being cancelled and the can kicked down the road? It's an enthusiast's card - even with the main event intact. Wandy only maybe saves it (Swedish visa? I hope Wand applied today through UFC Attorneys - Longshot - maybe he was already going, though?).

Haha, damn, wait . . . Sweet-Sassy special? BBQ Dutch sausage and cheese on Armenian wheat lavash crust? Smoke and a Pancake? Damn it, I'm reaching. I'm also realizing that I am really hungry.

Chael will fight BOTH and still have time to create a new Swedish Meatball pizza special.

All UFC has to do is be all like, "Ryan Couture? No no no, we said RANDY Couture. Randy. There, now stop asking for refunds." Problem solved.

Cancel the whole event and blame Greg Jackson.

Good call on Wandy and I completely forgot about Bader pulling out versus Glover. Wandy is probably the only one that will say "Yes" because Rashad & Hendo sure as shit won't.

Bader just pulled out of a scheduled fight with Glover 3 weeks ago due to injury, and every other top 20 LHW under contract to Zuffa is either hurt or booked for an upcoming match. Maybe they'll bring in Wand, since DFW clearly doesn't give a shit how many brain cells that guy is going to have left in 10 years.

Somebody call Ryan Bader. Not that he necessarily puts butts in seats or brings viewers to the TV but he should be pretty fresh after starching Matyushenko in under a minute 2+ months ago.

Why would a Top 10 UFC fighter take this fight on short notice? It's not smart. The UFC's own rankings have Mousasi at #10 and some other rankings I've seen don't even have him as high as 10. What's the career benefit in fighting a guy like Mousasi on short notice? I'm not even sure why Gustafsson is taking the fight. A win doesn't get him any closer to Jones than he already is and a loss likely drops him down the ladder.

This nonsense about fighters having balls or being scared is lame. These are professional fighters. I think their balls bonifides are well established.

And I grantee no top 10 lhw has the balls to fight mousasi on short notice
