Brandon Vera: “The Truth” Or “The Liar”?

(Yep, that’s Dana White’s handwriting.)

This thing has been dragging on for a year and now Brandon “The Truth” Vera‘s ex-manager, Mark Dion, is saying Vera should change his nickname to “The Liar” after the botched UFC contract negotiation – resulting in the two splitting and Vera doing nada for a long stretch. An extensive rundown of what started all this is over at The report says Vera should have to fulfill the agreement with Dion and give the manager 1/3rd of the dough made from the 2007 Tim Sylvia bout, in addition to $100K from future fights.

The Post It note at the head of this post was apparently penned to Vera from Dana White in the middle of the negotiation process. Here are the details:

– Three fight deal worth $90K/$90K, $100K/$100K, $115K/$115K, and then $150K/$150K, $170K/$170K, $185K/$185K if Vera were to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion.

– $7 Million over 4 years, plus a $100K signing bonus if Vera were to become champion.

Vera didn’t like the offer, so he and Dion countered with this:

– $150K/$150K, $175K/$175K, $200K/$200K, plus a $1.5 million signing bonus.

– Insured 10 fights over three years, $3 million per year, plus a $1.5 million signing bonus.

So obviously the UFC wasn’t into that deal and who could blame them? Vera’s stature was growing at that point in his career, but that counter offer is premature. Hey, I’m all for fighters getting paid much more than they currently get, but for Vera to think he deserves superstar money at that time and place is not something I’ll get on board with. Anyway, Vera continued negotiating with the UFC without his manager and ended up with a $100K pay day for losing to Sylvia during UFC 77. Part of the beef is that an earlier fight with “The Maine-iac” didn’t happen and Vera blamed Dion. From The Fight Network:

Vera says it was Dion who prevented him from fighting Sylvia in March amidst contract talks with Zuffa LLC, owners of the UFC. As standard practice, the UFC wanted the 8-0 fighter to extend his contract before he walked into the title bout. Instead, Vera says he left the table with a sour taste in his mouth for the promotion, one that was unwarranted in the end.

“I believed, I thought that the UFC and I had come to an impasse during negotiations,” says Vera. “Now, I know certain information was never relayed to me.”

Legal battles rolled on until 11 days ago when the CSAC ruled in the arbitration between Vera and his ex-manager.

Vera has not met his burden of proving that Dion engaged in illegal conduct in violation of the laws and regulations of the Commission which would establish legal cause for issuance of an order terminating the contract or that Dion failed to act in a reasonable manner in discharging his obligations as a manger as provided for in the contract.

There was no evidence presented that Manager [Dion] would in any way have benefitted from the rejection of a bona fide promotional or endorsement opportunity.

Manager and fighter disputes will always be part of life in this biz and the fact that the UFC was involved just increased the intensity of the matter. There’s a lot of evidence in Dion’s effort to clear his name in the mess, although he’s obviously going to be one-sided. The report details a lot of the behind-the-scenes greed and shit-slinging that goes on, so check it out.

I think Dana White put it best when he stated, and I quote, "Fuck fuckity fuck fuck shit pussy ass mother fuckers." He's a poet and don't even know it.

I'm having a very very difficult time understanding why he wouldn't sign a 7 million 4 year deal. Considering how little a fighter can get paid, and how quickly the fortunes of a fighter can change after just a few fights..... that's a golden ticket right there,
