BREAKING: Lesnar Pulls Out of UFC 131 Bout Due to Diverticulitis Flare-Up; Carwin Steps in to Face dos Santos

(Lesnar was emphatic that this would not be a career-ending malady.)

The UFC held an impromptu conference call today to announce that former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar has been force to pull out of his upcoming UFC 131 bout in Vancouver next month against Junior dos Santos due to a recent flare-up of diverticulitis that has left the North Dakota native physically unable to train for the bout.

Hear the audio from the callĀ HERE.

An obviously disappointed Lesnar, who spent 14 hours at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN yesterday undergoing a battery of tests, explained that he tried to work through the exhaustion and the pain of the malady, but it was simply too much to deal with while preparing for such an important bout. Both Lesnar and UFC president Dana White echoed the same sentiment that the fight is of secondary importance to Brock’s health and wellbeing, revealing that his symptoms began resurfacing three weeks ago.

Stepping in for Lesnar, who called the development, “a speed bump on the road,” will be fellow heavyweight contender Shane Carwin who was slated to face John Olav Einemo on the card. Acording to White, a replacement for Einemo has not been decided.

Carwin blogged about the news a short time ago.

“I was training and my phone was blowing up so I looked over and saw some missed calls from Dana and Joe Silva. I reached out to my manager to see what was going on and he informed me that we are taking Lesnar’s spot for 131. Junior is a serious fight and not the type of fight that you would normally take on a 30 day notice but I have a dream to chase and I do not have a lot of time to chase it. This is an opportunity to put myself in contention for the title,” Carwin wrote. “I know my Coaches will have me ready so I have everything to gain. My manager said “This is where you belong” and I am going to make sure I do everything I can to prove him right. Please help make UFC 131 one of the biggest cards in the year.I hope Brock is able to recover. I look forward to facing him again one day.”

We will have the audio from the call when it concludes and we have the chance to upload it.

Well , well , well . I guess Brock got cold feet. And , by saying that " he's a super athlete who is now learning to listen to his body ", that's crap ! If he haven't understand that his body is telling him , he ain't gonna learn ever!Another thing , Capt. America showed how to beat his ass . The only thing about that fight , Couture was too small , and Brock sat on him . If he stayed on his feet , Couture would have beat him . But , other fighters didn't take the notice . I really hope Brock comes back though . I love the way he runs around the octagon when he gets hit in the head ! That's a beauty ! But , I think he's scared now .

Actually most of you are going to be disappointed by this fight. Remember Carwin has been off for a long time .... and JDS was ready for Lesnar. Because these 2 have KO power with one punch they are both going to refuse to engage and either Carwin takes him down and mauls him or JDS lands a KO punch or misses and gets a 1 shot KO from Carwin. Either way there will be only 10 or less punches landed by the time it ends with 0:22 seconds left in round 1.

I think Carwin is a lot better than you lot are giving him credit for...he gassed badly against lesnar but that experience will improve his game no end..very dangerous and I bet Dos Santos isn't as confident as he was against Lesnar

Frank Mir has struck again. He must be stopped!

Also, somewhere, Len is smirking at the irony of ek-scape goats.

brock is rumoured to be converting to veganism and only firing his guns on shooting ranges.

It's a good matchup but not good timing. I would like see Carwin to shake off the ring rust against someone else first and i wanted to see Brock barrel roll again.

The change of opponent means everything to JDS. NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING changes about this fight. Carwin is a poor man's version of Lesnar. Two gigantic wrestlers who can sort of throw hands, but are really just hoping to land. Furthermore, JDS' gameplan doesn't change. Yeah, Brazilians can't wrestle but they can throw submissions. JDS by submission in the first.

Diverticulitis is some SERIOUS business. To all you guys joking around, if you ever know someone who's had it your opinion will change.
It's extremely debilitating & painful. For such a super-athlete he's just started to learn to listen to his body. Unfortunately with the disease comes the realization he's not invincible & that could possibly have effected his mental game. The diverticulitis also threw a monkey wrench in his nutrition and i bet he's still trying to adjust to a radical change in diet.
It will take time, but with adjustments & a good sport psychologist he'll be champ again.

Carwin v JDS ? oh yeah baby, got slobberknocker written all over it, and Brock, would it hurt to try some fibre in your diet?

The list goes back 5+yrs but the allegations can't be much more than a year old...point is the guy has purchased gear, presumably not for anyone other than himself, so yeah definitely not saying he is completely innocent too. Carwin's not gonna be the big bad beast who jumped Mir and ruffed up Lesnar against JDS, he's lost considerable size and strength.

Dos Santos would have tuned up Lesnar. Now he gets to do the same to Carwin. The opponent makes no difference. Cigano is the future!
RwilsonR- May 12, 2011 at 7:44 pm
@ Karma - he was training to fight on the same card against John Olav Einamo. So he should be peaking at the same time. Also, not all fighters are training all the time - see Rampage Jackson and BJ Penn.
@ Get Off Me - Carwin has tested negative since he entered the UFC. Not saying he is totally innocent, but his supposed connection to that steroid doctor is a case that is from 5+ years ago.

cock chestner is a cunt. I never wanted to see him back, I hope he never comes back, and I only wish bad things for him. the only sad thing about this is Junior didn't get to beat him into little pieces of balled up shit like Cocky is.
you can go die now cocky your usefulness has come to an end.

give meathead or schuab a shot at einemo
tallkitchenbags- May 12, 2011 at 6:16 pm
cockchestner is over-rated anyway. cain exposed his weaknesses and dos santos was not a good match for him. carwin had no choice but to take this fight. shane better have figured that cardio sh*t out and be pissing clean when the bell rings. i also feel this will be a more entertaining fight, though watch brock run away from JDS's strikes would have been pretty amusing. i got JDS by KO in round 2

All fighters are always training. What camp was he in training for?
Mongrel- May 12, 2011 at 5:53 pm
This is a way more interesting match up. I just hope that Carwin doesn't go with the 'lay-n-pray' just to get to another title shot, which he has a very big chance of doing.
This was an awesome call by the UFC.
MKO- May 12, 2011 at 5:44 pm
I would not be surprised to see Carwin come out wide open and get taken down and pounded on most of the first fight. Dos Santos is much, much stronger than people give him credit for.
