Business as Usual: Cris Cyborg, World Champion, Still Can’t Get a Damn Fight

(Weird. The “cover your ears and rock back and forth while humming to yourself” defense worked so well in training.)

Inactive and without a fight booked since her squashing of Jan Finney last June, 145-pound Strikeforce women’s champion Cristiane “Cris Cyborg” Santos is desperate to return to competition — so desperate that she had reportedly been negotiating for gigs with the WWE and a Brazilian fight promotion in recent months. Now she’s moved onto the public-pleading stage of her frustration. Here’s what she had to say yesterday via Twitter:

Hi My dear fans, want to fight too soon, but not dependent on me. This very difficult to renegotiate with scott. They’re not appreciating all I did for the event. I am very sad, but I will not give up. God has another purpose in my life…Maybe I fight the world jiujtsu not going to be the way you like with many punches…but I will give my best to make you guys like it.

Alright, Cris, here’s the deal…

First off, Scott Coker has an acute case of senioritis at this point. It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate you, it’s that he’s completely checked out of the job. Even in the pre-buyout era, the amount of power that Coker actually wielded to get things done was debatable. But right now? By all accounts, the UFC is running the show while Scott Coker sits alone in an office in San Jose, doing absolutely jack-shit. (And we’re not knocking jack-shit. It’s nice work if you can get it.)

The thing is, women’s MMA is simply not a priority for the people who currently run Strikeforce. There’s a good chance it never will be. But even in a perfect world for Cyborg — if Coker was calling the shots in some capacity, and wanted to book a fight for her — there’s still no logical opponent for the champ, and booking Santos in another squash match isn’t worth much from a business perspective.

A small part of the blame for that can be put on Strikeforce for not putting more effort into finding and building up contenders at 145. The larger reality might be that the ideal candidate doesn’t exist. A true 145′er with a good record and a recognizable name who’s as dangerous as Cyborg? (Or at least fairly credible and good-looking enough to put on a poster?) Gina Carano was the last fighter who fit that description. Erin Toughill was a good option as well, but her Strikeforce debut never materialized for one reason or another.

Cris Cyborg’s prime competitive years are wasting away and there’s absolutely nothing she can do about it, which is a tragedy. I hope that one day she’s looked back on as a pioneer of the sport. Unfortunately, she exists in a moment when there’s no logical place for a 145-pound female badass in MMA.

making her fight men is disrespectful as well. it puts her in freak show status. i mean so she fights a man... so what? does the guy get the 145 pound female belt? does she then go into pursuit of the 145 male belt? nope! so why even bother? its like thunder lips fighting the italian stalion. who gives a shit it means nothing. then she goes from being the most dominant female fighter on the planet to that chick(we think) that beat that dude. as bad as it is to say cyborg fighting anybody is like gsp staying at 170... so what they're gonna win big deal. female mma depends on level of hottness. its the same as two chicks making out. nobody wants to watch star jones and barbra walters make out. but megan fox and jennifer love hewitt would sell out madison square garden... admit it or not its cold hard facts. now let the bitching about how im not a true mma fan and i dont know shit and i must not love the sport comments begin.

What can you do? Amanda Nunes straight up turned down the idea of fighting her.

StrikeForce wouldnt setup a demanded warmup against any scrub for Toughill and instead gave her a descript fighter in Olsen with 6 weeks notice to which Erin turned down. Later, she got her scrub warmup (1-3) and lost unanimously.

Seriously, people actually projecting competition with any descript male fighter whosoever for Cyborg?!!
Do you all see the multiple, clean but ineffectual shots that Carano, Coenen, etc. landed? She ain't Aldo or Spider Silva; wake up! People are watching mma like its pro wrasslin.

I'm all for female fighters in the ring, just not on the mic.

Exactly Darkhorse. No matter who's the better fighter between Aldo and Cyborg, Aldo wouldn't win anything by fighting her.
DARKHORSE06- May 20, 2011 at 12:03 pm
No dude in his right mind would fight this "chick" unless the payday was huge. If he wins, big fucking deal he beat a chick. If he loses he might as well move to France with the rest of the faggots.

Womans MMA was banking 100% on Gina, Cyborg can be a better fighter all day but if noone wants to fuck her, she can't be sold.
NomadRip- May 20, 2011 at 10:14 am
I wasn't claiming anything about her being a man and wasn't kidding. I believe she is as capable as any man in her weigh class, and in fact would probably beat most of them.
just some dong- May 20, 2011 at 9:27 am
I know she's a big girl, but if there are literally no fights for her at 145, then why not at least attempt a cut to 135? It may be brutal, but if there's really nothing for her, I don't see another option.
Fried Taco- May 20, 2011 at 9:22 am
I'd love to see Cyborg beat the crap out of that new trainer they brought in on Biggest Loser.
Viva Hate- May 20, 2011 at 8:37 am
It would be easier for Cyborg to find a fight if there wasn't a dick involved, I am not saying Cyborg is a man, I am just sayin it has a dick.

Seriously though, Cyborg needs to fight she is scary good.

How long has boxing been around? How is the current state of womens proffessional boxing? At about the same level as roller derby.
While I think that some of the most technical, exciting, action packed fights I have ever seen have been women, it is a tough sell to the douchebag who just want to see Gina Caranos tits (Not saying that would be bad).
People to this day, still have a mental block at seeing two women punch the crap out of eachh other. I support female mma, but does mainstream America? And that is where the money is made.
Stak40- May 20, 2011 at 8:17 am
I am not joking at all i really think she cold compete and beat some men. It would sell.
Suppentopf- May 20, 2011 at 8:16 am
Let her fight rin nakai. Nakai has no name but the fight would serve as a nice freakshow.
El Famous Burrito- May 20, 2011 at 8:05 am
@jimbonics

Good idea, Cris Cyborg vs. Usagi Yojimbo.
jimbonics- May 20, 2011 at 7:59 am
If Strikeforce called me up and was all "yojimbo, wanna fight cris cyborg?"

My immediate and final reply would be "FUCK NO!"

@dubbayoo
I wonder if anyone else is getting Macy's ads. All I'm getting is The Hangover 2 and the unfortunately named new cereal from Kelloggs, Crunchy Nut.
rlh61- May 20, 2011 at 7:55 am
They should put her in the ring with her husband...you know, just to verify what we all know goes on at home. No homo.
Onan- May 20, 2011 at 7:41 am
All the clever commentary aside, it really is a shame that a high caliber fighter who is motivated and dedicated can't get a decent fight. Not just a decent fight, but any fight at all.

I always thought the "oh she looks like a man" stuff was very disrespectful to her. She comes to battle every fight. She doesn't talk a lot of trash and she seems to honestly want to put on exciting performances for the fans. She will always have my respect and I hope for the best for her.
NomadRip- May 20, 2011 at 7:26 am
I agree. Put her in with Aldo. It would be an even match-up.
Dubbayoo- May 20, 2011 at 7:16 am
These Macys ads you have on your page are really something.
amsterdamheavy- May 20, 2011 at 7:15 am
this is a goddamned shame
Stak40- May 20, 2011 at 7:02 am
Taco

Arguably she is too muscular to be anybody in 145 or 155 in the UFC.
fxdfp- May 20, 2011 at 6:59 am
Am I really saying this? Eff it - I can definitely think of a great logical place for a 145lbs female badass...
