Chuck Liddell Joins ABC’s ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Dana White might have forced Chuck Liddell into retirement, but somehow, some way, the Iceman’s competitive fire was going to find an outlet — it’s just too bad it had to be through a televised dancing competition. UFC.com has revealed that the former light-heavyweight champ and UFC Hall of Famer has accepted a spot on the ninth season of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, which premieres Monday, September 21st. Liddell will be battling for dance-floor supremacy against Michael Irvin, Donny Osmond, Tom DeLay (!?), Melissa Joan Hart, Mya, Aaron Carter, Kathy Ireland, Kelly Osbourne, and seven other C/D-listers. Chuck has had no prior dance training, and told UFC.com "I like to dance, but I don’t know how to dance." Still, he’s not counting himself out:

“I want to win. I don’t like losing in anything, so I’ll work as hard as they’ll let me…I’m gonna go out, be myself, and show what kind of people we do have in this sport. I’m sure the reaction will be mixed (among fight fans). My friends are gonna be excited and I’ll never hear the end of it because they’ll make fun of me, but it should be fun and I think everyone will like it.”

As for why he’s taking on this particular challenge, Chuck credits boredom:

“They asked a couple different times, but it would be too much time to take off from training for fights. Now I don’t have any fights coming up and I’m not training, so it’s something to do…When I talked to them after I agreed to do it, they said if you don’t have any background in dancing, just learn it when you get here. Don’t confuse yourself by starting with somebody and then having to come over and re-learn it…I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited to get started and see where I’m at.”

Liddell will meet with his professional dance partner for the first time today. Is middle America ready for Liddell’s special blend of creaky footwork and marble-mouthed interviews? God help us, we’re about to find out…

This is actually a great move for Chuck and the UFC (as horrible as the show is), I work with a few ladies in the office that follow this shit religiously, its a good way for Chuck to go out for the UFC and church up their image to mainstream America and Suburban housewives.
