Eddie Bravo and Royler Gracie Rematch Set for September 25 at ADCC

A long-awaited rematch of the 2003 Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament bout between Eddie Bravo, 40, and Royler Gracie, 45, has been confirmed for September 25. The match will be contested at a 165-pound catchweight under ADCC tournament rules.

The first time the pair met in São Paulo, Brazil, Bravo, who was then a brown belt under Jean-Jacques Machado at the time, shocked everyone, (including Gracie) by locking in a triangle and eliciting a tapout from the decorated black belt. The win earned Bravo, who has not competed since the tournament, the respect of the BJJ community as well as his black belt from Machado. He would go on to start his own style of no-gi jiu-jitsu known as the 10th Planet system, which is centered around the Rubber Guard.

News of the match-up, which was first reported by ADCC on its Facebook page, was confirmed  by Bravo via Twitter and his Nibiru forums.

“Yes it’s true, it’s on like don Juan.I am so stoked that you guys are as pumped as I am.Thank you all very much 4 all the love and support!” he tweeted yesterday.

Royler spoke of the rematch with GracieMag International today, calling the 2003 loss to Bravo a fluke.

“Even though he beat me, every now and again I catch word that Eddie Bravo wants to go again. Perhaps Bravo wants a sequel to prove it was no fluke,” he said. “So I’ll let him have a rematch. Lightning never strikes twice in the same place, nor kills the same horse.”

The event will also feature another superfight between Renzo Gracie and Ze Mario Sperry.

ccman one thing I agree with is that martial arts evolve by keeping what works.. however the gracies invented nothing. They don't have a single technique that is exclusive to them. Maeda was a judo student and all of their techniques are judo.... which in turn was derived from original jujitsu but Dr Kano actually did make changes. Funny because a lot of people get angry with me for saying that... until they research it. I'm not knocking BJJ, I'm just saying it's judo.

@ joe. Actually the Gracies did make a new System as did Bravo, and Roach does advertise the freddie roach system of boxing, which is disputed by the likes of the Mayweathers. Just saying.

Hell by what you say, Bruce Lee was gay for recreating a fighting system and eliminating the old. which if you think on it, is the entire basis of MMA, retire the worthless nad keep the effective.

I think it's gay when people start their "own" martial art or system. Every technique is old... you may apply it or have some personal characteristics but to say it's a NEW system is crap. Props to the fighters though... no disrespect to their skills. Freddie Roach doesn't advertise "the FREDDIE ROACH boxing style/system"

I don't think Royler's jiu jitsu was top level when he was under 5 years old, seeing as how there is only a 5 year difference between the two.

seems to me that eddie has nothing to lose by the match up, if he wins, which i believe he will pretty easily, his system of no gi gets a big boost, if he loses, he loses to a guy who has been doing jiu jitsu at the top level longer than eddie's been alive. i believe he'll win by the way because his system of jiu jitsu has many moves and transitions that i doubt royler has ever seen before

I don't understand how people can say its a fluke. It was actually a very basic triangle set up that eddie obviously intended to do. Should be a good match. People should just give eddie his props for beating someone as legendary as royler. Everyone loses, its just the name of the game.

Bravo was already exposed in the same ADCC tournament. After he beat Royler, he was owned by Leozinho in the semi-finals.

Eddie will win again. The oldschool Gracies are too set in their ways and havent evolved with the game.
Incidently this is as pointless as Gracie vs Hughes.
Why not make it interesting and have it be an MMA fight? Ya know, the reason the rubber guard was alledgedly created

After winning their 1st match Eddie Bravo retired from competition - so if Eddie loses their 2nd match, will he retire from teaching Jiu Jitsu?
