Frank Mir Injured, Out of UFC 98 Title Unification Match With Brock Lesnar
(Well, it didn't really look like these two BFFs wanted to fight anyway.)
A planned rematch between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir for UFC 98 on May 23 that would have unified Lesnar’s UFC heavyweight title and Mir’s interim UFC heavyweight title has been canceled. Multiple sources have confirmed to FiveOuncesOfPain.com that the UFC was recently informed by Mir’s camp that he has been unable to train recently due to a back injury that could require surgery.
There is no word as to whether Lesnar will remain on the card against a new opponent or if he will be taken off the card entirely. The UFC had just officially announced Lesnar vs. Mir II via its website earlier this week.
A follow-up report by MMA Mania called it a knee injury, not a back injury, but the situation remains the same — UFC 98's headlining bout has gone from Lesnar vs. Mir to Hughes vs. Serra. Unless, of course, the UFC throws in a replacement for Mir. (The winner of Gonzaga/Carwin, anybody?) But with the rivalry and dual titles that Lesnar and Mir have accumulated in the last year, it's hard to imagine that the UFC would risk giving Lesnar a loss and killing the heat behind the matchup. I'm kind of confused. Why would Nog not be a decent replacement? Keep in mind he was battling a staph infection for the Mir fight, and that Lesnar still has a lot to prove. Lesnar has two credible wins, a loss, and win over a can. I don't think that makes him by any means unstoppable. Not to mention that style wise Nog's jitz matchs up well against Lesnar's inexperience. Nog could just as easily submit Lesnar.. Mir did. I'm not saying I think it will happen but who else would you put in as replacement? Too soon for Gabe or Shane, Randy just had his shot, Cain isn't ready, and everyone else pretty much sucks.
Also, the last time I remember a situation like this happening was after gsp/penn 1. That fight was to determine who would fight Hughes for the title. GSP won but couldn't fight for whatever reason, so Penn was put in to face Hughes (I think). I believe that happened again with Hughes/Serra/GSP. It seems like in this situation, that's what ufc usually does.

I'm not hating on him. I don't particularly like him but I don't blindly hate him either. I think he's legit but the fact remains he hasn't fully proven himself. His first fight shouldn't even be talked about. His second fight he did the same thing Jake Obrien was able to do only a little better. His 3rd fight he lost, and his 4th fight was against a much smaller much older opponent that he had a hard time grappling with. Still a win over Cotoure is impressive. He's deffinitley legit and a dangerous fight for anyone, but he needs another win or 2 over good opponents to really cement himself.

Staph infection or no staph inefection, Nog is done. He almost got ko'ed by Heath Herring in UFC...he had a hard time standing with Tim Sylvia and just seemed slow and heavy. Sure he's still decent and can put on a show but Brock would just devastate that guy.
Again, not a Brock fan in anyway and i dont think Brock is necessarily unstoppable (Fedor, Alister Overeem, maybe even Aleks Emelianenk, Josh Barnett could all pose threats) but Brock is to fast, strong and determined...if he did lose to Nog it'd have to be something very careless and sloppy like getting caught in another heal hook which i would assume he has done counter training for ever since that happened.
I would much rather see Gonzaga go for it

As for a replacement, take Kongo off the April card or the winner of Gonzaga/Carwin. There's no other hw that really deserves a shot at the title based on running track record. Just for thrills and giggles, they could sign Butterbean up for a one-off fight. He wouldn't win, but he'd try to make it a show. Too bad Lashley signed elsewhere.
Fedor's a distant dream, barring any unforeseen miracles. Semmy Shilt's a big f*ck*r too, but I think he's commiteed to prior obligations to other organizations.
