Guess What? Chael Sonnen’s Camp is Appealing the Outcome of the Anderson Silva Fight

…and we specifically asked for AquaDeco to go with those brown M&Ms!

Well, that didn’t take long.

After appearing genuinely humbled after losing the second round his middleweight title fight against Anderson Silva at UFC 148, none of us were buying the idea that Chael Sonnen had been humbled by the loss and accepted the outcome. For starters, we literally saw the exact same thing happen after UFC 117. On top of that, since Saturday night there have been countless debates both on and offline over vaseline, shorts-grabbing and ‘illegal’ knees that potentially cost Chael P. Sonnen a victory against Anderson Silva. In other words, if Chael Sonnen could come up with excuses to justify his “victory” over Anderson Silva at UFC 117, it was obvious that he would have an excuse for his loss in the rematch now that there’s actually some kind of controversy surrounding the fight.

Earlier today, it was reported that Chael Sonnen’s camp filed an appeal with the Nevada Athletic Commission to overturn the result of the his bout against Anderson Silva at UFC 148 to a no-contest. As first reported by Jonathan Snowden on The MMA Show:

“Scott McQuarry, the head coach of Chael Sonnen, says they’ve started the process to file an appeal with Keith Kizer and the Nevada Athletic Commission. They believe the knee Anderson Silva threw was illegal, that the intent was to knee the face, that it did it in fact strike Chael in the face, that he got eight stitches and that he bit his tongue. They also say Anderson grabbed the cage at the point of impact. They are intending to appeal and have the fight ruled a no contest.”

Before we get back to Illegal-Kneegate, it already appears that after talking to NSAC officials, Sonnen’s coaches have already scrapped the initial plan. Instead, it looks like Sonnen will just stick with appealing to both the fans and Dana White for a third match against “The Spider.” Considering that NSAC Head Keith Kizer had no idea what the legal basis of an appeal would be, that’s probably for the best.

For a guy who complains about wasteful government spending, Chael Sonnen and company almost wasted a lot of money on a frivolous hearing.

Back to Illegal-Kneegate: The perceived illegal intent of the knee in question is not in any way, shape or form relevant, so let’s not even have that debate. The vaseline (that was wiped off of Silva immediately, mind you) didn’t seem to prevent Sonnen from taking down Silva in the first round, so how about we end that debate too? As for the shorts-grabbing, Silva was warned about it during the fight and Sonnen admitted after the fight to grabbing Silva’s shorts as well. If you wanted Yves Lavigne to separate the fighters and deduct a point from Silva, then kindly refrain from explaining how that would have prevented Chael Sonnen’s boneheaded decision to attempt a spinning backfist, allowing Anderson Silva the opportunity to finish “The America Gangster.”

As numerous fans, pundits and members of our comments section have already pointed out, this is just another instance of Chael Sonnen being his own worst enemy. He has now lost two fights against Anderson Silva due to monumental lapses in judgment, and is clinging to the idea that he is the victim of a series of illegal tactics. If Sonnen is ever going to hold a belt in the UFC – at any weight class – he needs to stop making excuses and avoid the mental breakdowns he’s been having during title fights. Also, if Sonnen’s endgame is establishing a reason for an immediate rematch, I highly doubt that the UFC will want to taint the reputation of its most dominant champion by implying that he cheated during their fight Saturday night.

And on that note, I offer one final picture of the knee. You may now resume your debate. Keep it civil, you guys.

Props: @ArielHelwani

Here's the GIF. Still looking for the phantom fence grab.

Sonnen -- from hilarious xenophobic racist hillbilly to mere chuckle. Good riddance.
YoungGrimmm- July 11, 2012 at 5:21 am
The claim in italics says that Anderson grabbed the cage at the point of impact. My response below simply addressed the picture. This seems to be the point of impact and no advantage was gained...how about being nice to a first time poster instead of being so angry?
SteelKilroy- July 11, 2012 at 2:39 am
Apparently YoungGrimm, you should have pursued a 2nd major...one in English, reading in particular. Let's see, if every action has an equal and opposite reaction, then you would know from your physics degree (and plain, good old fashioned, reading, that I said the photo depicts the "end" of the knee...you know, the "equal and opposite reaction" part? And, yes, the slow motion, or regular motion if you like, does show what you cannot see in the picture.

Anyway, I'm done trying to explain things to trollers and huggers (and physics majors)...it's been debated enough already.
cman- July 10, 2012 at 7:56 pm
Xeno. Read what I wrote and tell me which personality gave you that interpretation. I said grease did not effect outcome. I don't need your black guy gay fantasy to say if he was greasy.
YoungGrimmm- July 10, 2012 at 6:18 pm
OK so this picture shows clearly that he did not use the cage to develop extra force during the knee. If he were to be using the cage to his advantage he would be pulling the cage inward (Newton's 3rd Law-introductory high school physics) so that the cage would then pull him towards Chael. Perhaps a slow motion review of the action might reveal something different, however this picture clearly shows that he DID NOT use the cage. Just my two cents (and yes I have a physics degree, I'm not making this shit up!)

Vasoline must counteract TRT
SteelKilroy- July 10, 2012 at 12:42 pm
Hmm...Run Forest Run, I distinctly remember commenting on UFC 148 and as hard as it is to agree with predominantly imbeciles, yes, trt'ing is wrong and in Chael's case, just plain stupid. But to grease up right in front of the eyes of the world kinda surpasses Sonnens stupidity knowing at least not to do it while a camera was aiming at him. Therefore, especially questionable, is Silva's IQ & confidence in his own abilities.

Also, I've got to say...when it gets right down to it, I really don't have animosity or an urge to hug the nuts of either Silva, Sonnen, or any other fighter. I just SO hoped to see this particular fight and it's result without any reasons for idiots, myself included, to infinitely debate crap just like this...but the moment I saw the vaso being spread on the legs (even if that was all that happened), I sighed, because I instantly "knew" all hell was going to break loose following the fight, regardless of how many rounds it may have lasted.

Anyway, one last point on the "steroids" you mentioned...TRT simply means, Testosterone Replacement Therapy, used to treat men with low testosterone counts. And while I, yet again, agree w/ you in that I SERIOUSLY doubt that Chael's testosterone was (or ever has been) low, testosterone is light years away from, say, anabolic steroids.

Finally, regarding the "moron" label I slapped on "article's author", I admit I was wrong. The truth is this: Anyone continuing a debate that, in the end, will have absolutely "ZERO" effect on, 1) the changing of anyone else's opinion, and/or 2) the chance that it will somehow have any impact on whatever happens next, makes us ALL "morons" for actually believing otherwise..."Peace" blogger-nation!

CMAN - Unless you were in there with the towel, you don't know if the grease was fake or real. Let me hand you back your tin-foil hat so you can re-watch what was broadcasted - and what millions of other people witnessed.

STAK - Is only the CP staff allowed paint the picture with different hue? As for Sonnen, how much will like continue to like him if he files a official protest supporting his own poor performance? Doubt the UFC would sit idle, and they would likely pay his attorney to shut down any public dissent anyway.

To all you out there crying about an illegal knee or a grab on the shorts, or a hand on the cage, or greasing.... SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU PUNK ASS BITCHES!!! Your little great white dope got beat AGAIN you dumb sons a bitches. Sonnen did a better job than ANY one before him and probably any one to come, until Silva is legitimately over the hill. Is it that hard for you to fucking swallow your piss ant pride and admit that Silva is the champ. There is a referee in the ring to make sure the rules are being followed and not abused. This fight didn't even last long enough for Silva to abuse the ref's warnings. It is clear that Sonnen did not get kneed in the face and if it was a graze, then a fucking graze against the face isn't enough and shouldn't be enough to declare a no contest. You damn pussy boys would be happy to take that win away based on some half ass conspiracy that Silva came out and cheated his way to a win. A word of advice to you haters, GRAB A HANDFULL OF YOUR OWN FUCKING NUTS AND STOP RIDING SONNEN'S, FUCKING HOMOS. You assholes make it hard to give Sonnen his props simply because you all hype him up as some cheated fighter that was actually the best in the world but never had a fair chance when reality is he was subpar most of his career. When his "legal" testosterone levels were sky high he came in and won a couple of fights to go on and have the most impressive showing against Silva we've seen. Sonned deserves props for that. He doesn't deserve a belt or another shot or all the nut riding. So if you're still riding his dick it's for other reasons. You already know what you batches, who disagree, can do...
Stak40- July 10, 2012 at 9:24 am
Must be sad to go through life a complete fucking hater. No problem with pessimist, realist or skeptics but haters, especially on the internet are fucking bitchmade pussies who haven't accomplished anything somewhat significant and life and spend the rest of their shitty lives hating on those who do.

I am a Silva fan and at this point I am new Sonnen fan much like i was after the first fight and before the TRT test and subsequent shit talking (lame). Never found Sonnens shit talking to be funny but i get why some of you do. I think Sonnen brings it to each and every fight but I also feel that his success probably coincides with his beginning TRT. If its legal in the sport and you are within the acceptable ratio then cool. What I am shocked and relieved to see/hear is nothing, absolutely nothing from Sonnen himself except for his post fight interview which gave props and only props to Silva. So, why the fuck cant the rest of you bitch ass dick riding nut licking internet pussies accept that the guy you were cheering for LOST. Guess what it happens in all sports. Sonnen is cool with it, he isn't (at this point) fabricating or sensationalizing any conspiracy theories involving the fight and has accepted defeat. Why can't yall?
humperdinkal- July 10, 2012 at 8:16 am
@ArmFarmer-I couldn't agree more-Obvious from the rash he had just like he did from his first fight.
Ricardo Guitardo- July 10, 2012 at 7:57 am
Silva's a cheater with vasoline knees
ArmFarmer- July 10, 2012 at 7:50 am
I also think it's funny that there are still people that apparently have no idea that Chael was on TRT for this fight, and that it's not roiding, not cheating, and completely legal.
ArmFarmer- July 10, 2012 at 7:49 am
I'm a sonnen fan/silva hater, and I can't imagine why anyone thinks that knee was illegal after seeing the slow mo gifs. I don't think he got any extra power from the fence either. It's not illegal to put hand on the fence for balance, which is what he did. I wanted nothing more than to see silva lose, but chael blew it. I also can't imagine that anyone who's ever used vaseline.. and I have to assume a lot of the cp nation has found one reason or another to use some vaseline.. thinks it can be removed with a quick towel wipe. That stuff doesn't come off easy. I don't think any of this was the reason for chaels loss though, I think chaels piss poor attack and piss poor recovery, and piss poor scrambling from the gnp was what did him in...
Run Forest Run- July 10, 2012 at 6:21 am
"Principles," SteelKilroy? Like taking steriods strictly for baby nuts? You sir, are the moron.
knucklesamitch- July 10, 2012 at 6:07 am
The knee was legal, however, the thigh that hit Sonnen squarely in the face milliseconds before was night. Do I think Sonnen would have otherwise won if not for the questionable strike, maybe not ... But it doesn't alter the fact that it was an illegal shot.

In other words, Chael Sonnen's camp is NOT appealing the outcome of the fight after all, rendering this whole article pointless. If you would like to read something on this page that is actually worth your time, scroll down to SteelKilroy's post.
RearNakedSpoon- July 10, 2012 at 5:05 am
Make a rematch, air it for free, any dodgy moves by Andy including assault at the weigh-ins and he gets an instant DQ and loses the belt.

Let's see what happens. If you disagree then you are saying he needs to bend the rules and barely get away with it to win.
SteelKilroy- July 10, 2012 at 2:54 am
Omg,you moron (article's author), in the end, it really doesn't necessarily matter if Silva's lubed legs, shorts grabbing, and/or the questionable knee to the head/chest, had any effect on the outcome of the fight. It's the "principle" of the matter which I'll come back to.

First though, you're correct that the greasing of his legs didn't prevent the take down "but" had Chael attempted to shoot at Silva's "bare" legs instead of his waist, there wouldn't have even been a take down (In fact, it says quite a bit about Silva's lack of a take down defense)...not to mention that the vaso certainly "would" have been a problem for the rest of the fight (and regardless, ANY mma'er will tell you that you can't just "wipe off" vaso with a towel.

On the grabbing of the shorts, I agree with you, not a big deal in the overall scheme of things, however, regarding Silva's grabbing onto the cage while launching a knee adds a tremendous additional amount of force than a normal "body initiated" knee. Looking at it now, it sort of begs the question "why" would the "Uber-fighter" that Silva is believed to be, would feel even the slightest need to do anything to gain an edge over Sonnen.

That said, as I mentioned in the beginning, whether any or all three of Silva's actions affected the outcome or not, the fact "still" remains that Silva, the "Legendary best, best, best...etc, figher in the universe", DID grease his legs, did grab shorts, and did pull the fence to add force to the knee that ended the fight.

And finally, I'd like to reference the image you posted...for all the folks that didn't watch the fight, and the knee, over and over in slow motion, and all they know is what they see in your picture, then of course they'd agree the knee was legal. If, however, they watched it, they would know that what you posted is the end of the knee "after" it connected with Chael's mouth and chin while at the same time with Chael's upper chest. "Your" picture shows what it looked like after it did the damage and inevitably slid down making it look like the epitome of a perfect knee.

Anyway, you did a "bang-up" job of kicking Chael while he was down...or maybe I should say "kneeing" him. Bravo!
RED_COAT- July 10, 2012 at 2:40 am
Anderson silva cheated. the pressure Chael put on him scared him so much he cheated to capitalise on probably the only opening cheal gave him. Anderson Silva is a great fighter and its a shame that his "legacy" is so great its excuses poor performance and clear rule breaks.
oc in this bitch- July 10, 2012 at 12:23 am
dude as long as u fight dirty and do illegal tactics to gain an advantage youll have conspiracy because they effect the outcome.if u dont want them then dont grab shorts dont grease ur body and dont knee someone in the face enough said!if u cant see that he was obviously doin dirty shit to gain an advantage ur fuckin blind.he got dominated again got scared and had to cheat to change his ass whoopin from happening all over again.
Mr_Misanthropy- July 9, 2012 at 11:45 pm
It all makes sense now! Look at the above photo! Anderson Silva exists in multiple dimensions simultaneously- even extra dimensionally! Clearly his power increases exponentially with rapid movement through time and space that allows more of his extra dimensional self to manifest in our Earthly four dimensional state. His size is markedly larger than a normal human being in the above photo- it's as if we are viewing the shadow of a titan, projected into the octagon.
cman- July 9, 2012 at 11:38 pm
Grease? Was flagrant. Wipe face, rub body, wipe face, rub body. Affected fight? No.
Knee? Hit chest, follow thru was to head. Rashads made zero head contact so not comparable. Illegal? Dunno. In most sports your always responsible for illegal contact, mma, unsure. It no way kitzer has the stones to look at this one so won't matter. Dana white, Dana white, blah blah blah. NSAC wants no part of controversy in this after the manny prison raping is fresh on people's minds. Zuffa has nothing to do with it BECAUSE;
Conspiracy therories, we always get them. Except again da man makes more off a trilogy fight than a title defense since instant rematch would sell Brock numbers. No one explain it to xeno, he might take off his tinfoil helmet.
