It's Official: Fedor vs. Aoki in "Sparring Exhibition"
(The hoax match-up the world has been talking about since never.)
It's a crazy rumor no more. Now Fedor Emelianenko vs. Shinya Aoki is a crazy fact, according to press release sent out today by M-1 Global. The two will square off in a "five-minute special sparring exhibition" at the "M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction" on April 29 in Tokyo. So what will the lightweight and the heavyweight try to do to each other over the course of the most bizarre and pointless five minutes in MMA history? According to the press release:
Complete rules of the Fedor vs. Aoki sparring exhibition are still being negotiated, but it will be presented as a special attraction during a 19-bout event scheduled to feature head-to-head M-1 Challenge matchups between host country Japan vs. England, Team USA West vs. South Korea, and Spain vs. France.
Well, that's appropriately vague. I guess this is what happens when you start to run out of credible opponents (who won't ask for a lot money to fight you) but you still want to get out of the house and break a sweat: you spar with a skinny guy in tights. Sounds reasonable. Oh, wait. No, it's completely insane. But what do we expect at this point?

what do you want him to do instead? Sign a horrible deal that D.White has proposed for a "dream shot" in the UFC for half the pay he gets in other shows? He explained that the contract that the UFC offered him would include no increases in $ and would bound him to the organization. Meaning he could no longer do promotions and fights in Russia where he currently resides. Maybe some guys don't wanna move to Vegas and fight under Dana's rules, this is the number 1 fighter in the world and he feels like he should be able to have a say in his future. It's not that Fedor doesn't want to fight Josh, it's just he can't right now. You guys should know that a lot of these fight arrangements are outside of their hands. Affliction, M-1, Goldenboy, etc. has to set it up first. It's not like Fedor has been asked to fight and then he said no. No fight has even been set up yet so stop bashing Fedor for no good reason.
As for D-white, not everyone wants to go to UFC. Sure, they are the biggest organization but Fedor loses a lot going in to the UFC - money, control over his name, oppressive contract conditions, the right to fight in Russia, compete in Sambo tournaments (which he sees as a big source of pride and role-model for young Russians, etc.).
Get the fucking facts (at least some, as I did) before you blast your mouth away.

Ok, Aoki is one of my favorite grapplers in MMA, but come on what's the deal here? Fedor is not only a master of MMA he is also a master of Sambo and went undefeated until like late 2008. Plus he is gonna have at least 50 pounds on Aoki. I guess Aoki has a good chance if he can manage to control Fedor with some rubber guard crackhead control or something, assuming he can even get Fedor into his guard and his posture broken. I would much rather watch each of them fight a high profile MMA fight, or a high profile grappling match with someone in their own weight class.

I think this will be awesome to see. I know these guys are getting paid but I also think that this is a fun opportunity for them. In what other sport could two all starts throw together something like this?
Basically this is like two NBA all stars putting together a 1 on 1 match. That would never happen. Be happy that you can see something like this take place.

guys its not a fight its an exhibition its not like fedors going to run in and rip aoki's arms off...nor is a loss going on the record of the losser nor is it a ploy to protect fedor its a chance to see the less useful but impressive throws that are in sambo while watching crazy flying submission attepts all in all good fun.

Finally, a voice of reason with some facts behind it. As much as I would love to see Fedor in the UFC, it is not the best move for him. Sure, he and his managers could make a couple of concessions, but he winds up being stuck in a contract that favours the UFC. This is for as long as they want to keep him there, at a fixed rate of pay, and they can cut him whenever they want once his first deal expires for no reason. That is incredibly foolish for him to accept.
Dana will not likely cross-promote becaue I think he is fairly certain that his people will lose to Fedor and therefore the UFC loses credibility. He and the gang have worked too hard to risk letting the other orgs get a stronger foothold, even though it would likely be better for the sport as a whole...there is too much control for not enough pay in the UFC, although they are generally the best org right now.
The best, and worst, thing that should happen is that we have a governing body that allows fighters to compete for any promotion just like (dare I say it?) boxing. That sport is pretty corrupt and has too many orgs, but the freedom to fight for whomever they choose. Can you imagine the excitement if Randy had been allowed to fight Fedor 2 years ago while still the UFC champ? Or how about if Fedor and Mir/Lesnar got to face off? What about Anderson Silva and (insert favourite MW/LHW from within or outside of the UFC)? We need to be shown matches that people want to see, and fighters who are legitimately the top contenders need to get a shot after earning it.

Aoki takes this one easily. He is much to slippery for Fedor to hold on to, and without punching Fedor realy lacks to much submission skill. I'd say Aoki by triangle within the first two minutes of the exhibition.

Those are wins over legit fighters. That is impressive. That's more wins over notable fighters that you can say for anderson silva and gsp now get your facts straight buddy. Fedor is 30-0, even though some of those wins were maybe not vs the hardest competition, I victory is always one punch away. They all had a punchers chance.
