Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

It’s Over: Cro Cop Calls It Quits, Disbands Team, Lingers a Moment in Empty Gym Before Quietly Turning Off the Lights

(‘My heart, she breaks.’)

The sadists among you who were hoping Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic would go back home to Croatia and rediscover the will to fight by repeatedly kicking a wall at his family’s home, well, you’re about to be disappointed.  Cro Cop has now officially called it quits, telling that he has “no motivation left and it’s time to leave.”  He also reportedly told his manager, Zvonimir Lucic, to release the various members of Team Cro Cop, which we assume included a young, bright-eyed intern who refused to accept the news and tried in vain to get a “Cro Cop” chant going even as everyone else filed silently out of the room.

A sad day in MMA history, but a necessary one.  The game just ain’t in him no more.  We’ve already paid him a tribute, but allow us to dedicate one more video after the jump:

CC thanks for the great memories. And for the memories you permanently erased from the minds of all those guys who kept their right hands down too far.....

I never liked this douchebag crow crap and I never thought he was a fighter, and he never won a fight in UFC, and he never was shit. Everytime I said " he can't win, he can't win, and stupid nuthuggers believed in himn, NOW finally this piece of trash realizes he wasn't shit, and he ain't shit, and he never was going to be shit, and unlike UFC who hired this waste of space, finally it is over and I can say a final time..... slow-slop sucks.
Goodbye loser keep your ass out of fights with real fighters.
Bye to rubbish.
This is a great day in the MMA world far as I am concerned.

If Alistair Overeem couldn't knock me off Cro Cop's nuts, I'll be damned if I'm letting go now!!!!!!!!

How do I get a pair of those Croatian Speedos? Halloween is just around the corner and the Mirko costume would be a hit with Pride fans at Knott's Scary Farm.

On a serious note, Mirko's kicks will be remembered as probably the most feared weapon this sport has ever seen.

While it is a sad day to see one of my favorite fighters of all time retire, you have to salute the character of a man who, while knowing he would be fed all the cans he wanted in Japan and keep making money at it, realized his best days were behind him and decided to walk away with his pride (no pun intended) and honor intact. I salute you, Mr. Filipovic, and thank you for for all the hard work you have put in to entertain us. You will always be one of the greats in MMA and I hope that you will find a way to stay involved in the sport in some fashion. Even if you take another path and have nothing to do with MMA in the future, the sport would not be what it is now without you. Good luck to you and may the fishing in Privlaka always be good for you!

Ladies & Gentlemen: Raise your glass and toast Mirko Filipovic's good name. He is a true legend, and may he always be remembered as one.

Thank you, sir for the great fights.

Bog Mirko. Samo zelim da ti pocnes trenirati, ovdje u USA ima dosta naroda sto bi platili dobar novac za tvoj trening.

Off subject for a second though: Dan Quinn just returned my phonecall, lol, he told me to get fucked, then laughed and said "no shit"

Viva Hate- September 24, 2009 at 10:14 am
I can see Cro Cop walking away to the sad music they played at the end of each Incredible Hulk episode.

Thanks for the memories and all the brains you destroyed with kicks.
One Two- September 24, 2009 at 10:07 am
thats some sad shit Cro cop is a bad ass, but i guess it was his time, somewhere Bonnie tylers hero is playing and tears are being shed. by somewhere i mean my room.
Jugger- September 24, 2009 at 10:04 am
Sure enough... the link now says that he's "still on the fence". Hahaha... Now that's some classic Crocop drama, right there. You just gotta love this guy.
Clyde- September 24, 2009 at 9:58 am
I don't think it was his heart breaking in that picture.

It takes a big man to admit when he's done. Good luck to you Mirko.
Smitty- September 24, 2009 at 9:56 am
You could see in his last two fights that he just wasn't fighting the same. He's been in this sport for a long time, and it wears on you more than any other sport in the world IMO. Good luck big fella, and thanks for the memories.
CAP10- September 24, 2009 at 9:44 am
I think he was pooping when they took that picture.

Three weeks ago some friends of mine and I all got together at my house for what we call "Retro Pride Night". We watched all the fights cards from the 2003 Grand Prix whilst eating nachos & cheese and drinking root brewskies. That year, CroCop fought Igor and Big Nog and we watched both of those fights. Some of the guys at my house that night were newer MMA fans. Needless to say, CroCops fights had everybody's eyes glued to the screen.

I never thought CroCop was "all that great" skill wise. He was a glorified kick-boxer and he rode that train for about as far as it could take him. That said, his LHK struck fear in the hearts of his opponents and puts butts in the seats. Win or lose, you couldn't help but wonder how his fights would turn out. I didn't know whether I was watching to see if he would win, or if he would lose. Either way, it's been a joy to follow his career.

Here's to another member of the "old guard" passing. Thanks, Mirko, for the memories.

Next "Retro Pride Night" will be in couple weeks... Before Shogun fights Lyoto. Of course, we'll be watching the 2005 Grand Prix (War Shogun!)... and I'm sure those new guys will be on the edge of their seats while watching his fights with Magomedov and Fedor.

I hope he finds some way to stay involved in the sport other than competing. He has a lot of knowledge and experience to offer. I doubt commentating is for him (but that never stopped Tito. hey-yo) but maybe he can train or coach. The dude is a icon in Europe.
Fight Fan- September 24, 2009 at 9:38 am
Many hours of quality entertainment provided by Cro Cop.Thanks for the good times and all the best!
