Open Thread: Jon Jones, And MMA’s Thin Line Between Love and Hate

(The fact that Jones stomped that rabbit to death seconds after this photo was taken did not get him any new fans either.)

By Nathan “The12ozCurls” Smith

There are a couple of taboo topics at your local watering hole: religion and politics. These two subjects bring out the best and worst in people because the issues are argued with both an intense passion for one’s belief and ire against another’s. Both sides are unwilling to concede the debate, and when you mix in a few cocktails, it ultimately ends in name calling and/or fisticuffs. But among MMA fans, a third topic has already been added to the unwritten “Banned-Bar-Conversation-List.” I’m speaking, of course, about Jon Jones.

Over the past several days, CP has posted not one, not two, but three pieces concerning Jones and his arrest for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. The UFC light-heavyweight champion’s arrest was justifiably big news, and both his supporters and detractors took to the comments section to voice their opinions; the Bones-lovers came with a shield to defend Jones and the haters came with party favors to celebrate his misfortune. Here are a few representative comments left by some of you…

SquidInk
Jones haters, what’s it like being so fucking perfect?

Darkside
Everybody falls down eventually. But, that fall hurts a lot more when it’s off of your high horse.

Brobafett
oh god someone drove drunk!!!!??? what a horrible person…blah blah blah. Who gives a fuck? Its stupid he even has to apologize, he already killed his Bentley what else do you want?

RearNakedSpoon
You know how some people get bigger ego’s when they drink? His must have finally blocked his vision at this point.

AKArbalest
Awesome. I don’t want to sound like too much of an asshole, taking joy in other people’s misery… but I’m glad we can stop with the phony good two shoes act.

bigpurn
So many haters. I have never seen people take so much pleasure in something bad happening to someone(besides all the Lebron haters), and for what? I’m sure most of you have done worse than wrecking your car against a pole.

There you have it.  Put these six people in a bar together and it is only a matter of time before one guy is swinging a pool cue like a samurai and another is breaking a Budweiser bottle over somebody’s head.

In the wake of Jones’s arrest, this quote from April 2012 has added jet-fuel to Team Hater:

I’m glad the UFC wanted to work with me, as well. I think they trust that I will never make them look bad. You never have to worry about me getting a DWI or doing something crazy. I think I’m a good company guy.

Supporters say he made a mistake and have promptly forgiven him. Critics now have all the ammo they need to prove their point that “Bones” is in fact a fraud, a phony, a shister, or whatever term you prefer to use.

It is likely that Jones will be offered a plea deal that will make a trial unnecessary if he accepts it, but in the meantime, the UFC brass have requested his presence for a little pow-wow. That fact that a plea will be offered is not out of the ordinary, nor is a meeting with your bosses after an arrest. Either way, the sycophants and the haters are both waiting with baited breath to get on their soap boxes as soon as any news breaks.

Jon Jones has become as polarizing a figure as Chael Sonnen, albeit for completely different reasons. Sonnen says outrageous things to get attention and he wears the black hat well. He is very cerebral in his approach and knows that he can hook many people with his antics even if most know better. Jones, on the other hand, says all the “right” things but seemingly can not convince many fans that he is the proverbial “White Knight” that he claims to be, and the backlash he receives on a regular basis seems to baffle him. He’s the Heel that tried so hard to be a Face.

There were over 100 total comments on both sides of the fence to choose from. Some were thoughtful. Some were sophomoric. Some were vile and a few wanted to sell me some wholesale Nikes. God knows I love the cesspool that is the CP comments section and enjoy the banter we share, but when it comes to Jon Jones there doesn’t appear to be a grey area — there is nothing that either side can say to sway the other side’s convictions.

To the Jon Jones lovers:
Do you honestly believe everything that he says is genuine?

To the Jon Jones haters:
What does he have to do to gain your respect?

Can we all get along?

Grab your pool cues, beer bottles, and swing away in the comments section…

We don't need to know him since childhood to know that he's fake. You ever watch one of those shitty mtv dating shows, where you can just tell by the bad acting that the entire thing is scripted? That's kind of how I feel when I listen to Jones talk. He's a great fighter, not a great actor, and his scripted PC answers are irritating. He also acts like a godamn immature brat all the time. He looked like he was going to cry when rashad "ruined his moment" by coming to the ring after he won the title (which is pretty standard anyway). That's why I don't like him.
enrikk- May 25, 2012 at 5:00 am
I can see why a lot of people would see him as fake, but then again... does anyone remember when he lost to Matt Hamill? If ever there was a moment in the world to get an honest reaction from a professional fighter with that kind of hype, it would be from an unexpected announcement that they had just lost via DQ (not even a "no contest", which would seem more appropriate). The Jones haters would have a much stronger case if he had thrown a fit afterwards and proclaimed himself to be "the best" (a la Tyson) ...but he didn't.
.
Anyways, just a thought. Really, I don't understand why anyone would get their panties in a twist over the guy, it's like when women start thinking they're involved in the lives of their favorite Housewife (listen bitch, it's just TV, she doesn't know you and you aren't best friends). It's a sport, folks - can we get back to analyzing what actually goes on in the cage?

^^^^^Aheavy has got this one covered. I wrote the piece and I think you are delusional. But thanks . . . . I guess. Stick with the 50 Shades of Grey you weirdo.
Clyde- May 24, 2012 at 3:57 pm
It does seem a lot of people really went against Jones as soon as he won the title. Some did it before, some were saying he was overhyped after he beat Stephan Bonnar. No matter who he beat, or how convincingly, it was always a case of "he got lucky" or "he's never beaten anyone good" or "[insert name of fighter]'s gonna expose him" and so on.

He tries to be humble and people say he's insincere, he says he's good and they say he's cocky, he does what he says and they say he's self righteous, and of course if he doesn't do as he says he's a hypocrite.

He's fucked up now and it doesn't matter what he does, this will follow him around for the rest of his career/life. in fact, it would do even if he's acquitted and it turns out he was perfectly sober, within the speed limit and there's video footage of him swerving at the last second to avoid a nun pregnant with the second coming of Christ, he'll still never hear the end of this.

But he's still the champ, so until someone can get that belt from him, you may as well get used to him.
IpulledOut- May 24, 2012 at 3:17 pm
@Brobafett , your a fucking idiot . so if this drunk driver killed your wife , mother , sister , brother , dad or anyone you cared for you'd say " hey Bones , you don't have to apologize , your Bentley is worth more than the lives of the people I care for . just let me take it for a spin when you get a new car or get this one fixed". WOW , the stupidity that comes out of some peoples mouths sometimes is unbelievable . . by then again , you must be a fucking joke anyways . . . dumbass .
The12ozCurls- May 24, 2012 at 2:42 pm
Thanks to all my fellow "cesspool" dwellers. From the first few CP pieces on Bones there was a lot of love and even more hate. I wanted to give all of us the opportunity to voice our opinions without handcuffs. I thought you guys might crucify me for "trolling" but thanks to all the pro-Jones and anti-Jones comments, I think we all have a better understanding of each others views. Thanks again for the feedback and screw you (gotta keep shit real, right?).
LOKI- May 24, 2012 at 1:17 pm
If you wrote more than 3 lines for your comment you care too much either way. At the end of the day he is still rich, tallented and a douchebag.
uzitotinbaby- May 24, 2012 at 1:06 pm
If I was 24, rich, AND within just a few short years rose to the very top of my sport, I think I'd be kind of a dick too. He's socially awkward. Give the kid time, he'll level out.

A 24 year old kid with a wife and two kids of his own...
Kintamachikara- May 24, 2012 at 1:05 pm
"Bated is a contraction of abated through loss of the unstressed first vowel (a process called aphesis); it means 'reduced, lessened, lowered in force'. So bated breath refers to a state in which you almost stop breathing as a result of some strong emotion, such as terror or awe." Baited breath, on the other hand would mean your breath smells like bait. Which maybe it does, I don't fuggin know.
RearNakedSpoon- May 24, 2012 at 12:58 pm
To the Jon Jones haters:
What does he have to do to gain your respect?
......Move up to heavyweight to gain my respect as a fighter but his personality will always stick.
Fletch the V Stretch- May 25, 2012 at 6:28 am
Agree 100% on both accounts. Good call.
RearNakedSpoon- May 24, 2012 at 1:01 pm
Stick kinda works but I really meant stink.
jimjim- May 24, 2012 at 12:31 pm
Jon is extremely talented, no doubt about it. His ego on the other hand, and the way he conducts himself is plain simply annoying. "I'm Jon 'PerfectJesusMegaTalent' Jones, and gonna pick him apart"...

He kinda strikes me as a "lite" version of other very talented athletes with shit-attitudes.. Like Tyson b(ack in his haydays), David Haye, James Toney and Mayweather..
Malibu- May 24, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I'm neither lover nor hater, but I am someone that is still trying to recover from injuries I sustained as a result of being hit by a drunk driver more than two years ago. This is a much bigger issue than the UFC...your brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, mothers and fathers need to be protected from drunk drivers and until
as a society we treat this more like a crime and less like a social faux pas we are all at risk.
holeeball- May 24, 2012 at 11:33 am
You can't say you'll never get a DWI, get a DWI and not be called fake.
Worst are the idiots you hear "I'll quit smoking come next month". Then next month comes and the smoking continues. Well you now what, you're a fake. Just try to smoke away from others so you don't end up killing anybody else but yourself.
knucklesamitch- May 24, 2012 at 10:53 am
I would like anyone from this comments section who contends that Jon's persona is fake to please tell me what what point in elementary school you met young Jon Jones. Until someone on here says they've known him for a majority of his life, how do you know he's "fake"?

As for all the people who are going to flood the comments section and say they never drove drunk in their life, I call bullshit. There is no one in this world who has had a beer who can say that. 1 is all you need to be considered over the limit ... So unless you tend to go to a bar, drink 1 beer, and then wait more than an hour to leave, then you are a bunch of fucking liars.
Anhonestmoose- May 25, 2012 at 8:16 am
I realize it's probably too late for anyone to see this, but you, sir, are a moron. 1 beer does not equal over the blood alcohol limit. 1 beer=0.02 BAC (approx. depending on body weight). Legal BAC in every state is under 0.08. I have had to take drinking classes several times due to underage drinking in high school, this is something I am a bit of an expert on.
thurmonator- May 24, 2012 at 1:46 pm
I live in Chicago and was a student at the time. UPass+common sense=TRAINS AND BUSES.
Dizzylittlelord- May 24, 2012 at 11:17 am
if im going to drink i dont drive so ive never driven drunk. dude needs to be banned from driving and pay a fine, thats it. no one was hurt apart from his appeal and his ego.
Texascrazyhorse- May 24, 2012 at 11:11 am
Exactly what I was trying to say. Drinking "sun up to sun down" and "living in the burbs" have 0, nadda, zilch to do with the fact of getting behind the wheel of a car anyways, so how that gets brought up is beyond me. I'm not even trying to defend him because it is a serious violation of the rules, but you cannot judge someone unless you are that person, or God. Also, to those who say they havent driven drunk in their lives.....nice try, I'm not buying it. Maybe you havent I dont know you, but I am sure that you have done things in your life that werent legal. You've probably downloaded music illegally.....ohhhhh your a bad person.

I dont remember the exact saying but it goes something like this. "Dont judge unless ye be judged." The only thing we should be judging Jon Jones on is his ability inside the octogon. Everything else he says outside of it can be attributed to confidence, fight hype, ignorance, and idiocy.

I would love to see how some of you react when someone is following your every step and critiquing your every move. Turn it around and see how it feels.

holeeball- May 24, 2012 at 11:56 am
Nice try but no cigar. JJ is judged on his own actions which contradict his speech. Hey, maybe you rape young children, I don't know. Too harsh I know, but I hope you see what I did there.
whiterice- May 24, 2012 at 11:35 am
"You can't judge someone unless you are that person, or God" Are you serious? Then what are our system of laws for? I could've sworn we used them to judge people. Then, to keep the logic rolling, you equate pirating music with driving drunk. I don't think anyone ever died by having their album downloaded. According to you, I shouldn't judge a murderer, since I pirated a movie.
I mentioned living in the burbs to imply that I had to drive to get anywhere (unlike a big city). When I was out, if there was no one around who could drive, I took a cab, or walked if it wasn't too far. If I had to leave my car in the parking lot of the bar overnight, then my parents would drive me back to it the next day. Doesn't seem so hard to me.
Fried Taco- May 24, 2012 at 11:07 am
Definition of fake: proclaiming you will never be busted for DWI, and then get busted for DWI. Not sure if he did this in elementary school, too, though.
whiterice- May 24, 2012 at 11:02 am
You say no one can know whether Jones is fake or not, then presume to know that everyone who drinks drives drunk. By your logic, you would have to have drank with all of us to be sure....wait a second...were you the dude last Saturday who bet us he could fit his fist inside his mouth?
the_realist- May 24, 2012 at 10:24 am
I'm going to try to be as neutral as possible here...to draw in both sides.

When you're in the spotlight very suddenly, like Jon was, I think it's a strange new part of your life. Like, you can do whatever you want before being so well-known, and no one says jack shit, but then as soon as people all know your name and watch what you do, you have to invent an image for yourself. Or at least, that's what Jon did. I'm not faulting him for it, but it is fake.
The12ozCurls- May 24, 2012 at 2:12 pm
"I’m going to try to be as neutral as possible here…to draw in both sides."
Damn, that is what I was trying to do. Did it worked?
whiterice- May 24, 2012 at 10:22 am
I like to think I'm in the gray area - but many of the Bones 'lovers' seem to be saying, "ok he screwed up." Screwing up is getting wasted and puking on your girlfriend's mom. This is a serious crime; he needs to pay for it like a man before he moves on. Unfortunately he'll just take a plea, some token AA classes or something, this despite the fact that NY is supposed to have a zero tolerance law. Even if the system treats his actions lightly, and even if other athletes do it "all the time" it ought to carry more weight for us as the people (as opposed to an institution). I grew up in the burbs and partied my ass off but I never drove drunk or buzzed once.
intercept440- May 24, 2012 at 10:09 am
fact: jones is a phenominal fighter at the moment
Fact: he is a self righteous asshole
The End
thurmonator- May 24, 2012 at 9:59 am
I am so beyond sick and tired of the "Jon Jones is young" defense. He has two young children, a spouse, a house, a well-paying job, cars, bills, and a slew of other shit that should have matured him by now but hasn't. We're the same age and at one point when I was 23 I drank from sun up to sun down for a period of MONTHS. Never once did I drive drunk. I didn't have nearly as much to lose and not once in my entire drunken life have I EVER driven drunk.

With that said, if this mofo has enough money to buy a $200,000 car then he has enough money for a cab. Hell, he even has enough to buy some friends to drive him home. He should have called his mother from the bar instead of from the police station. Age is not an excuse. Being a self-inflated egomaniac who refuses to act his age is the problem. /rant
jjrdias- May 26, 2012 at 7:47 am
When the dude's into his 30's, short-sighted apologists will still be saying that he's a "young guy that made a careless mistake"...
Fletch the V Stretch- May 24, 2012 at 10:32 am
Not gonna lie. I think you are one that will be considered a "hater" but I loved every word of your post. :)

Sloppyspray- May 24, 2012 at 9:50 am
So that's what Mario Yamasaki's hands look like outside of those black gloves.
Texascrazyhorse- May 24, 2012 at 9:31 am
Its like this folks; Jon Jones is a hell of a fighter and no one can deny that. With that being said, he is still very young. I will be the first to admit to wrong doings in my early 20's and I am sure that all of you have done some stupid things as well. The fact of the matter is that he screwed up. He doesnt seem to be passing the blame or saying that its not true, he took responsability for his actions and will be paying the piper for it.

I, like most of you, dont buy into this good guy persona, but if thats what he has to do to get ahead then so be it. If you dont like his confidence then stop watching him. This inigma of Jon Jones is no different than the Fedors, Lombards, and Anderson Silvas of the world as it will have its share of people who love him and MANY who hate him because he is so good.

The fact of the matter is this, he screwed up. No one should condone or partake in drunk driving but the simple fact is this; most people chastise those who do it have done it themselves at one point or another. Jones is a young man with lots of money and did something stupid. I am a fan of Jones but I dont condone this behavior and hope that he rectifies it sooner rather than later because I dont want to see him go down the path that many young successful athletes have gone down.

Ok, you guys can have your soap box back. Thank you, god bless you, and god bless the United States of America.
holeeball- May 24, 2012 at 11:49 am
I love the "[most of] those who chastise those who do it have done it themselves at one point or another". It's a great comeback argument and not defensive at all.

Some are hated for being good and successful others for being fake. Different people hate for different reasons but JJ managed to concentrate all the hate of very different people on himself. That is amazing now that i think of it.
jjrdias- May 26, 2012 at 7:56 am
I guess it stems from the fact he came out and said "the UFC will never have to worry about me getting a DUI" AFTER getting in trouble with sliding his car into a booty-club car park - and now being caught on a DUI. Why make such a phony promise? Maybe it was to "get some fans"... Let's face it: he's fake, and there's no reason for it.
Fletch the V Stretch- May 24, 2012 at 10:15 am
Who wis give this a thumbs down? Whoever did, kill yourself.

I am not a fan of Jon Jones. While I will always be entertained by his skills in the cage, he is not a guy I will ever root for. Each person is different and I don't care if people like the same fighters as myself or don't. As long as the fight is entertaining, it really is all that matters.
The_Dead_Cow- May 24, 2012 at 9:28 am
Go ahead and file me under "dosen't give a fuck". I think JJ is a great fighter but, outside the cage he's not very entertaining so I don't pay much attention. He's a fucking cage fighter, not your wife, not the president of America, and fuck not even your friend. So why does everyone give a shit?
Shifty-Eyed Dog- May 24, 2012 at 9:05 am
Now Cage Potato will get sued by Jones for that caption because it will hurt his image with PETA and ASPCA. Jones seems to have about as much of a sense of humor as Dana White.
the_realist- May 24, 2012 at 10:16 am
I was wondering about that caption...eye witness account, was it?
