Judging from this new article on SporTV, Anderson Silva‘s current hiatus from fighting is exactly what we thought it was — a way to avoid title defenses against low-profile contenders and hold out for something big. Namely, a superfight against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. Here’s what the Spider had to say about the fight he wants more than anything (translation via BloodyElbow):

“Regardless of who wins, even if St. Pierre loses, a fight with me can happen. A fight like this is above anything else. St. Pierre is one of the greatest of the UFC. Right now, a fight with Condit is meaningless.”

“Meaningless”! That’s heel-talk, brother! GSP was recently medically cleared to take on interim champ Carlos Condit at UFC 154 (November 17th, Montreal), and even if the Canadian legend loses that fight, it’s safe to assume that fans would still turn out in droves to see St. Pierre fight Anderson Silva sometime next year.

Here’s my only problem: If Silva is putting off middleweight title defenses against deserving contenders in order to wait for a potential match against GSP — which could be held at a catchweight below 185 pounds — shouldn’t Silva relinquish his middleweight title to do so? I’m not going to hate on Andy for making the last fights of his career count, but his pursuit of big paydays shouldn’t put an entire division on hold, right? Dana White might need to step in and regulate, or else we could eventually be looking at another ridiculous interim champion situation, and nobody wants that.

i dont think he wants the big pay day. I think he jus wants to fight the person who he feels, and has said before, is the best fighter befor he retires. keep in mind silva never planned on fighting this long.

How can he be P4P #1 when he only beats people smaller than himself?
If he is P4P #1 already then why is his age an issue when he has a longer time than anyone else to slip down the food chain??

2 years ago when everyone begged for GSP vs Silva it failed to happen and the fans gave up on it. Now there is a more interesting and fair matchup at 205 for him so the GSP superfight idea has gone stale to the majority of fans.
He can prove a lot more against Jones than against GSP and THAT'S THE POINT OF A SUPERFIGHT.

This is a fight people have been asking to see for YEARS. Its not like this is coming out of no where, Silva knows that he is nearing the end of his career and he doesnt want to spend his last 2-3 fights on your so called "deserving contenders". TO all those talking about Silva's size advantage, dont forget he is the older of the two athletes and GSP's greatest srength is Silva's biggest weakness which makes for an interesting bout and you all know it.

Eat a dick, El Wop. The Silva hate on here is retarded. You can wish for Silva to fight Jones in one hand and shit in the other, and see which one fills up faster. It isn't gonna happen. The complaints boil to "well, it's his responsibility to defend the belt I want to see him fight contenders rawr rawr rawr!!!!" If Weidman wants a shot at the strap, he should beat a contender, not Mark Muñoz, a guy who got sent to 185 by a headkick KO from Matt Hammill. Until then, I could give two shits about seeing Silva in another yawner of a mismatch against someone at 185. He probably should move up to 205, but fuck it, a superfight with GSP beats nothing.

Ignoring that complete lack of knowledge on the subject and moving onto this one, Sonnen used the same synthetic testosterone treatment for the 2nd fight but this time his exception was fully cleared with the commission. I certainly never heard any news that he had stopped the treatment.

For the record.. GSP and Jones are both very big for their weightclass. Condit might tower over GSP, but he's not built like a calvin klein model on steroids either. Condit is lanky, gsp is ripped. Being taller doesn't make you bigger.

I seriously can't understand how people can't see that Silva LITERALLY only wants to fight people he knows he can beat. That is all there is. His magical LHW "tests"? Two LHWs with sloppy styles and questionable chins. This motherfucker tried to call out Luke Rockhold. Don't get me wrong, I love Luke (swoon, no homo bro) but he's OBVIOUSLY only tested himself against lesser competition. When was the last time you ever actually thought "Oh, Anderson might lose.."? Chael Sonnen. And was Silva particularly enthused about that fight? No, because Chael was clearly "undeserving". How about before that? Rich fucking Franklin. The first time.

If GSP were at 205lb, and Jones made 170lb, Anderson would be GSP's best friend and would be gunning for Jones. I don't really care though, I think gsp vs silva at a catchw eight would be a very competitive fight. Gsp has excellent striking even if he doesn't care to use it much anymore, and he's got the best takedowns and top control in mma. If Lutter, Chael, and Hendo can take Anderson down at will, I think a beefed up gsp can too. The difference is he will be a better striker than those guys, and has better sub defense. I think it'd be a fun fight and I'm all for it.

Somebody here please explain to me why you think Chris Weidman has a better chance of beating Silva than GSP. Go on, I'm all ears.

And also, shut the fuck up about John Jones and Silva being the same size, Jones is a fucking behemoth 205er, a class 20 pounds above where Silva fights. And Jones has already said he doesn't want that fight.

Jones is no behemoth he is a skinny lanky long armed long legged dude. And whn you are great you don't get great fighting people smaller than you, so win lose or draw, silva doesn't get shit from fighting GSP. However getting a Jones fight would prove hes the best. however it's a lose lose for jones to fight down to silva. The fact of the matter is it doesn't matter that they are both pussys and dont want to fight each other, if I was Dana I would book it. If they don't fight suspend them and take their belts. fuck a bunch of primadonna self indulging super ego-ed fighters.

I seem to recall a couple guys named Vitor Belfort and Chael Sonnen who are clearly not afraid to go up to LHW to fight this behemoth 205er. Anderson is bigger than both of those guys.

probably about the PPV cut for all the people willing to buy GSP vs. Silva. GSP is a stud and so is Silva. who wouldn't buy that? you tell me who the one MW is right now above everyone else that deserves the next MW shot. there isn't a definitive #1 contender IMO. being 37 and only so many fights left in him, I think Silva is pushing to get some top tier shit that aint Jon Jones. Shit Jon Jones doesn't want that fight either. I'm sure most of us do. Plus, I haven't heard that GSP doesn't want the fight. you act like GSP has no chance and the fight would just plain suck.

Also, I think GSP should be the one talking about making the fight happen in interviews and begging Dana for, not Silva. That, to me, makes Silva look like a twat. If you are the baddest man in town, you don't go picking fights with guys 4" shorter than you and 30 lbs less to build up your resume. Just my thoughts. Also, usually "#1" doesn't go around picking fights with "#2".

I mean I don't know if the fight would suck or not. Fact of the matter is, EVERYONE bitches out GSP's take down, GNP, and constant advancement of position. That is HIS ONLY chance to beat Anderson in my opinion and it would be a long 5 rounds of him doing just that. So either we are gonna see GSP only take Silva down or Silva just connect those "ambien hands" on a much smaller opponent. At this point, I would much rather see Jones vs Spider. AND WHY NOT? Because NEITHER of them are confident they would be able to beat the other and it is apparent that NEITHER of them want a loss. Why do you think Silva wants GSP. He sees a smaller guy with a HUGE name that he can further build his legacy off of.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone calling out another fighter from a smaller weight class before. This is truly unprecedented bitchassness. don't listen to this shit about how much he respects GSP or how 'great' he thinks GSP is. The only reason Sandy wants this fight is because he thinks he'll be able to walk through GSP and collect a huge paycheck in doing so. I hope he gets this fight and GSP ends up smashing his skull through the canvas, shattering Sandy's entire legacy in the process.

With you on this. I enjoy watching Silva fight but the fact he wants to fight a guy smaller than him to "test his skills" is hilarious. Also, to the people claiming that GSP vs Silva is the fight the fans have wanted blah blah, that is simply bc there was no other champ that was dominant enough to make any sense. There is now. His name is John Jones, who only wants high rating PPV fights, big money fights, fights with guys who will test him. We can set that fight up for you John.

GSP is much smaller than Anderson, and has been out of commission for more than a year, but Anderson thinks this is the only fight that makes sense for him? And he thinks he can demand GSP come up in weight to face him, rather than he drop down if he wants the fight? Silva... something smells like fish. Might be your cup, champ. I hope GSP refuses to go up, i hope that he simply says 'come to 170 and it's on'. Can Silva make 170? Possibly not... but then maybe he should be calling out guys his own size (LHW).
