Report: Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman to Headline UFC 109

Mark Coleman UFC MMA
(Whaddya say, old-timer? One last job, for all the Lipitor?)

According to Sherdog, UFC hall-of-famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman have verbally agreed to a light-heavyweight headlining match at UFC 109 (February 6th, Las Vegas). Combined age for the fight: 90. At 46 years and five months old at the time of his decision win over Brandon Vera last weekend, Couture is the oldest person to score a victory in the UFC. (If only Ron van Clief had pulled off the upset.) Coleman, who made his Octagon debut at UFC 10 in July 1996, has had the longest career of any fighter currently under contract with Zuffa.

The pairing tells us two things. First, that the UFC realizes a razor-thin decision over Brandon Vera isn't enough to throw Couture directly into a 205-pound title fight; he'll need at least one more win over somebody he can beat, preferably by stoppage. And second, that the UFC is absolutely desperate for headlining bouts. Couture vs. Coleman may turn out to be a #1 light-heavyweight contender's match, but it certainly doesn't deserve to be. Unfortunately, there are no bigger fights available to main-event the card. Though a middleweight title match between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort was previously expected to headline UFC 109, Belfort says he may be fighting someone else at the February show.

Fun fact: In 1989, Couture and Coleman met in a freestyle wrestling match at the 1989 Olympic Festival at Oklahoma State; Coleman won by one point. So you can expect the UFC to start referring to this fight as a "MAIN EVENT GRUDGE MATCH."

Next year can't come soon enough for the UFC. *black persons voice* This shit ain't no main event !

I'd pay $0 to see this.

I wonder if Coleman will kick Couture out of his gym so he can train? Also I think this could be a decent scrap there wrestling and oldassness will probably be pretty equal, and there striking is probably close to equal so this could turn out to be one hell of a slug fest. The real question is can the octagon handle that much old man muscle all at once? This is not really main event quality, so the UFC should give all it's PPV buyers a senior citizen discount on this one.

I like the matchup. This should be a good chess match. 2 great veterans and UFC hall of famers going at it. I got Couture winning it.

I hope cotoure wins then retires. He shoulda retired after one of his title defense losses.

Who wants to see him lose to another old has been?

Its a sad state of affairs when this and tito - Forrest 2 are headlining ppv events.

I like it, this fight makes alot more sense to me than Couture/Vera.

Having said that, I would like to DVR it so I can come back to it everytime I'm having trouble sleeping.

STRIKIFORCE is lookin mighty fine right now. Have you seen the Evolution card? 8-D

The UFC is bordering on absolute desperation here. I wonder if we will see another clinch hug and kiss for the decission victory again. Sorry sometimes when its over its just over and time to hang em up no one wins when everyones bored

anyone want to bet that both of them will throw out the line "This is the best I've felt in my entire career"

Couture will win this one.
But this should have happened around 2003 or so. THAT would have been an epic fight.

Lay n Pray or Wall n Stall, take your pic. This is gonna be the worst main event in UFC history. I'll take Randy by UD.

The only way this fight is interesting in the least is if both Couture and Coleman go at each other like Rocky and Apollo Creed at the end of Rocky III and punch each other at the exact same time... and then POOF!!!>...both of their old asses turn into dust!!

Loser retires in the ring. That would create some interest for me. High stakes... loser leaves his gloves and mouthpiece in the Octagon and vows never to fight again.

The obvious thing, depending on how injured everyone is, is to throw the winner of this up against Tito if he wins against Forrest, while Machida makes his second defence against Rua. Then you've got a semi-legit challenger. If Forrest and Randy both win - and I hope and think they will - then the UFC is screwed again.

I just said this about two weeks ago and here we go again. One year ago, "The UFC is poised for the biggest fight in history!!! It's gonna be war between Couture and Lesnar!!! This is a real threat! Never count Randy out!!! He has a better chance than anyone blah blah blah" and the world was on his nuts as a superhero. Now, he's been reduced to an aged joke that people bitch about headlining a card. He hasn't exactly been getting his shit pushed in like Liddell did at the end. I'm impressed with him and will watch as long as he cares to fight. This is just me, but I'd rather watch Randy wrestle and box for 15-25 minutes than waste $50 on a 40 second first round TKO. At least you get your money's worth.

It's just kinda lame how the accolades get moved from fighter to fighter from one PPV to the next. Everyone hated Machida. He finished two fights... it's now an "era". Then he wins another decision and takes a verbal raping. When Jon Jones loses his first, he'll become Chris Leben 2.0. But fight fans are about as fair-weather as they come. Randy's been working hard in his fights. He's not gassing out in 4 minutes like Coleman.

Fear not, Randy. They may not love Captain America anymore and complain about money for your fights, but they'll still pay $200 for your jeans and $80 for a t-shirt to dress like you.

@MF Joel:
That sounds reasonable. Although, none of those guys will have more than 2-3 consecutive LHW wins under their belt at that point, making a title shot kind of shallow(which is fairly normal for the UFC). Guess we mgiht end up seeing Tito Vs. Coleman after all. That will probably be labeled as GRUDGE MATCH considering Coleman's manager talked shit about Tito's cumdumpster wife. Out of all 4 guys, I don't see any of them beating Machida or Rua, I don't give a fuck if Forrest beat Rua, that shit would never happen again.

Word ,
UFC 109:Geriatrics

I don't mind having Couture fighting guys he can beat, I just dont want to see it on the main event. I really wouldn't be upset if I didn't see this epic match of the 46 year olds.

Seniors Bout!!

I think this is going to be more like bingo then chess.

Somebody's gonna need a new hip after this one.

" I don't give a fuck if Forrest beat Rua, that shit would never happen again."

I second that!

How about UFC 109:Retirement

Coleman vs. Couture
Renzo Gracie vs. Matt Hughes
Matt Serra vs. ?

Pretty good comments. I agree too that this is absolutely NOT main event quality. I will pay nothing to see them fight. They are almost Undercard quality or at least #4 or 5 on the main card.

a battle of the oldies!!!!

whoever wins this takes it by lay and grey

@ Skeletor:

LOL @ "I wonder if Coleman will kick Couture out of his gym so he can train?" That's a really good question!

ijustcreatedanaccount FTW!

I love that picture of Coleman. It looks like he just spotted someone eating a banana.

randy's old man strength ain't gonna be enough against mark coleman's.... old man strength.

I used this on bloodyelbow but whatever.....
