UFC 136 Prospect Alert: Stipe Miocic Is a Straight-Up Beast

(Stipe Miocic vs. William Penn, 4/16/11)

Out of the 22 fighters competing on this Saturday’s UFC 136: Edgar vs. Maynard III card, only one will be stepping into the Octagon for the first time. That man is Stipe Miocic, an undefeated 29-year-old Croatian-American from Ohio who will be facing Joey Beltran during the prelims. So how does a guy with just six fights, who’s beaten nobody you’ve ever heard of, get an invitation to the big show? By being one of the most decorated blue-chip prospects the UFC heavyweight division has seen since Cain Velasquez. Seriously. Just check out his credentials…

While attending Cleveland State University, Miocic was an athletic phenom, earning a national rank as a Division I wrestler at 197 pounds and attracting the MLB’s attention due to his talents as a third baseman. Following college he pursued boxing, picked up a Golden Gloves title, and also went 5-0 as an amateur MMA fighter.

Miocic made his professional MMA debut in February 2010, and went on to win his first five pro fights by KO/TKO within two rounds. He won the NAAFS heavyweight title in June by leg-kicking Bobby Brents into submission, and landed a UFC contract less than two weeks later.

Miocic currently trains with Ohio’s Strong Style Fight Team, which includes Chris Lozano, Forrest Petz, and Jessica Eye. He spits a lot. Check out his knockout reel below, and let us know how you think he’ll do against the more-seasoned Mexicutioner this weekend.

Who thinks this guy could even get down to 205?? he is 6'4 240 and cut as a welterweight.. he looks as cut at 240 as Forrest Griffin after the cut to 205.. this guy is big and athletic.. i foresee him steamrolling Beltran and being 260 in the next couple years. This guy might be a legitimate contender in the future once he starts training at a top camp, hes only got 6 fights, your all to quick to dismiss.

He's got potential, but I much prefer Beltran's chances unless Stipe has made some drastic changes to his defence since these fights.

I say he KO's Beltran and his granite chin first round, 2:57 mark.

I've fought on a few cards with this guy in the Cleveland area and he is definitely an athletic freak, but obviously that doesn't mean he will smash dudes in the UFC. He has fought almost no competition and he doesn't use his wrestling nearly enough to compete with top guys. So far he has dominated everyone he has faced so it's hard to knock the guy, but we'll see if he can hang with the UFC boys....i forsee a drop to 205 in his future....PS there's a fucking exponent in my captcha, can we get rid of this shit? Cause I'm trying to unload some sex tapes and this is really cutting into my business

He's a prospect guys, he still has some improvements to be made. I for one support any Croat in MMA, I'm still waiting for someone to fill Cro Cop's shoes and Goran Reljic just didn't cut the mustard.
SonOfSerbia- October 4, 2011 at 8:58 pm
judging by his inferior Croatian fighting style i suspect he will get head kicked by the Mexicutioner ala CroCop v Gonzaga

I had to change my name because it didnt sound sexy enough.

NAAFS add guys amateur records into their pro records, so it'll tell you that Stipe is fighting a guy thats 7-4, but really he's 1-3 as a pro and 6-1 ammy or something like that.

Stipe needs to cut to 205, hes not nearly big enough to be heavyweight. I'm sure Cleveland wish him the best of luck, but he's only beaten big fat slow cans from around the area.
exect4500- October 4, 2011 at 3:59 pm
I'm curious why he changed his name from Bob Johnson to Stipe Miocic.

Oh man the hate train is out on this guy.. Wait for it...
I'll back him up I'll say why not maybe he'll do fine. Great wrestling pedigree and pretty decent hands who gives a fuck if he comes and gets crushed at least we know this fucking kids gonna stand and bang so lets have at it.. OH and if I remember correctly even anderson silva refused to let Chael Sonnens arm go right away... Just saying.. Until you've been in the zone you can't speak on if he's a douchebag or not some people just do it. Eh It is what it is...
whiterice- October 4, 2011 at 3:06 pm
He looked slow.
IronClad- October 4, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Yah he for sure looks like a beast after refusing to stop pounding on a guy when the ref tries to pull him off. Fuck this guy, he'll get smashed in UFC. And take off those Cro cop wanna be panties, fucking tool box.
k-onda- October 4, 2011 at 2:31 pm
why is he hyped?
omunto- October 4, 2011 at 1:46 pm
Every video shows hands down, chin up. Toughman style fighting. I don't see the appeal.
danomite- October 4, 2011 at 1:44 pm
I just watched the first video. what does it take to be a golden gloves champ these day? a driver's license? his punching was stiff and he drops his hands every time he throws a punch.
danomite- October 4, 2011 at 1:40 pm
I say the Mexicutioner knocks him out. I base that solely on the fact that he has the same jaw line as Andrei Arlovski. Oh, and on his knockout reel (which had a grand total of 2 knockouts) he left his chin wide open. I know the guy he was fighting was clearly rocked, but ask Pat Barry if that matters.
MMAposeur- October 4, 2011 at 1:38 pm
Kinda looks like he may be lacking in punching power... either that or he's fought a couple dudes with iron chins.
Booosted- October 4, 2011 at 1:28 pm
wow. crappy job of refereeing. the dude clearly gave up, coulda got this jaw or cheek bones shattered on that last shot.
SeanSoloXXX- October 4, 2011 at 1:28 pm
Mirco now yes. Then No
skeletor- October 4, 2011 at 1:12 pm
Been seeing this guy for awhile. He looks good against cans but he's going to have to start high kicking the shit out of people if he wants to wear those shorts.
