Video: Brett Rogers Confirmed to Be Alive, Promises to Try Hard

Brett Rogers has been publicly M.I.A. since February, and it was starting to worry us a little bit. So it was a relief to see this interview he did with Ariel Helwani yesterday, in which the Grim appears to be in a healthy but reflective state of mind before his match with Josh Barnett this Saturday. Discussing his two-fight losing streak at the hands of Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem, Rogers said:

“I was moreso in that mindset of my amateur days, you know, I was kind of like ‘just give me a date and I’ll be there,’ and hope for the best. The proof is in the pudding, I can’t always flow with that mentality. That attitude will get me in a hole.”

Rogers says he began studying his past fights for the first time, and is focusing on more aspects of fighting than just boxing. (He even name-checks capoeira in the list of disciplines that he’s adding to his arsenal. And wrasslin’, of course.) What he’s not doing is talking trash, or making any guarantees about the outcome of the fight. “Ultimately it’s in God’s hands,” Rogers says. “I’m just gonna try hard. I don’t know how to say it, but that’s all I can promise.”

Barnett, on the other hand, is as confident as ever…

“I don’t feel like anybody’s on my level. But then that’s why I’m a fighter. I go out there because I believe I can beat anyone, and I’m better than anybody, and that my skill-set trumps this other person’s. But I know that if I don’t take him seriously it’s gonna be a bad night for me.”

Barnett also discusses his beard, false reports of his licensing problems, that hater Tom Atencio, and a possible reconciliation with Dana White. (“Be very sparing when you use the word ‘never’ for just about anything.”)

@ mt – It’s a ‘puncher’s fight’? Have you ever seen Barnett fight? This’ll be: Grim over-extending striking or getting crowded into the fence, Barnett with a TD, Barnett with top control and marginally effective gnp. Repeat as necessary until Grim loses heart ;) OR 30-27.

neither one of them walks into a fight looking conditioned. It’s a puncher’s fight, with 50/50 odds. I predict 45seconds of haymakers followed by another 14 minutes of fat guys hugging each other and throwing haymakers

Rogers is the worst interview this side of any 209 fool.
Barnett is fighting for a career at this point. he has very few legitamate options and his best hope for a 2nd (3rd?? 4th??) chance in the UFC is either win the tourn. or at least make some serious noise in it. sadly i think he picked Rogers since he is definitely on the low 1-2 in the damn thing. If he cant put him away fast he has no business fighting anymore.
