Video Tribute: Joe Frazier, 1944-2011

(Frazier poses with his arch-rival Muhammad Ali and that reptilian motherfucker Don King. Props: Sports Illustrated)

Boxing legend Joe Frazier — whose aggressive style and notorious left hook earned him an Olympic gold medal in 1964 and an undisputed heavyweight title reign from 1970-1972 — died yesterday evening after a brief battle with liver cancer.

“The world has lost a great champion,” said Muhammad Ali, who fought Frazier three times in the ’70s, including their “Fight of the Century” first meeting (which Frazier won by unanimous decision) and their “Thrilla in Manila” rubber match (which Ali won by corner stoppage). “I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration. My sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones,” Ali added.

From 1965-1981, Smokin’ Joe racked up a professional record of 32-4-1, with 27 wins by knockout; his only losses came against Ali and George Foreman. In recent years, Frazier spent his time running a boxing gym in Philadelphia, and trained his children Marvis and Jackie, who also competed professionally in boxing.

^ Yeah it breaks my heart to see most of the old time Boxers broke, all because of their shiity greedy managers, matter of fact it still happens a lot today.

Heres my take on it all. I really use to just be a huge Ali nuthugger I've been doing Martial Arts off and on for sometime now and whats not to admire about Ali his technique his skills all of it was just insanely sound right? Well when I finally watched Thrilla in manilla and saw how he treated Frazier after he helped Ali get his Boxing license back, Helped Ali with money leading up to their 2nd fight and then to have Ali sit their and deface the guy. I mean there is a line that needs to be drawn between douchebaggery and what Ali did and what Ali did and said just made me feel awful man. If Smokin Joe had not been blind for what? The last six years of his career which Ali was very VERY aware of, he wouldn't have lost to Ali in Manilla.. Ali was ready to quit and Frazier was willing to fight blind but his corner wouldn't let him. I always liked Joe as a person when my Grandma would watch boxing tapes and he was just a class act in interviews and his style was just an awful match up for so many boxers not to mention at the end of his career he wasn't as banged up as Ali and sitting poor as shit above his gym verse Ali getting rich and living well into his twilight years.. it's not fair by any means.. I'd more then bet it had a lot to do with his mangement.. it's just bullshit.

@ Karma, agreed the gun stunt was to far as well, I just feel he go caught up in the hype and let it go to far. Men make mistakes, especially ones under the pressure that Ali faced, but Ali is a great humanitarian who has done a lot of good out of the ring as well as in it. PS sorry it took to long to respond, the time difference in Australia makes us get the morning stories at midnight and I usually miss all the news :(

@Crow42, like your top 5 dude, but so many great names you could throw around for inclusion, great topic for discussion when you've got a cooler full of beers and youtube to check video's,love the fact you've included Jack Johnson, one of my favourite pieces of sports history are the tales of when he came to Sydney and fought, he pulled in 100,000 with fuck all promotion except word of mouth and newspapers

@ karma
Ya, great movie. It was shitty to see how much Joe took that shit to heart. With the answering machine and how he spoke of him. It seemed like a little piece of him was stuck back there in their last fight in Manilla. One of the greatest R.I.P Joe

@Gist--yeah, JDS and Velasquez are totally legit--fantastic athletes, well-rounded (and not in the midsection), and smart. I'm psyched for that one.
GistoftheFist- November 8, 2011 at 10:03 am
@dim Well as it's been said, people's skill are somewhat based on the rules of the match. If you only have to train for 15 minute matches, your cardio obviously won't be as good if you had to train for 15 3 minute rounds.
superflat- November 8, 2011 at 9:08 am
@dim mak: Guess that's a reason to look forward to Cain/JDS.
shitbag- November 8, 2011 at 8:28 am
@dim mak Right on, brother
dim mak- November 8, 2011 at 8:09 am
Looking at Frazier and Ali underscores what fat slugs most MMA heavyweights are. Can you imagine many UFC or Bellator HWs going 15 rounds? Or even bouncing on their feet at all? Speaking of which, BJ Penn needs to do nothing but jump rope for the next six months, and then he'd come back and clean house in both the WW and LW divisions.
DangadaDang- November 8, 2011 at 8:03 am
Frazier will always be one of my favorite boxers, right up there with Marciano and Jack Johnson.
Viva Hate- November 8, 2011 at 7:59 am
Gonna hook up my Sega Genesis tonight, pop in Greatest Heavyweights and kick a little butt with Smokin Joe. RIP.
KarmaAteMyCat- November 8, 2011 at 7:57 am
Ali didn't have to use the toy Gorilla and those words..
Todd M- November 8, 2011 at 7:52 am
Yeah Thrilla in Manila is a real eye opener, but Fuck Ali? thats a little harsh, Ali was under a lot of pressure and that doco was kinda one sided, I see what you guys are saying I was shocked with some of Ali's behaviour but he is a legend and a great man that lived in a crazy time under difficult circumstances, I think Ali was easily led and chose bad company, Don King, NOI, either way the issue is debatable. RIP Smokin Joe
shitbag- November 8, 2011 at 7:44 am
