You Gotta Be Kidding Me: UFC Bans Affliction?

Over the last few months, we’ve often been surprised at how petty and short-sighted the UFC can be — but if this rumor is true, it represents a new low for Dana White & Co. According to a report on, the UFC is trying to block the clothing line Affliction from sponsoring its fighters, due to Affliction apparently trying to start its own MMA organization. From the report:

We are still gathering all of the details about this story, but we have been able to confirm it with a couple of people within the MMA community. From what we’re being told, the UFC is no longer allowing the clothing line Affliction to sponsor its fighters…

The word is that the UFC was not happy about Affliction starting their own fighting organization. We currently aren’t sure if Affliction is partnering up with anybody or if they are going about it by themselves, but that was what we were able to confirm with our sources…

The last fighter to actually wear Affliction during an event was Georges St. Pierre at UFC 79 where he sported Affliction on his tights and gi. If you review UFC 80 and Wednesday’s Ultimate Fight Night: Swick vs. Burkman, you’ll notice that Affliction was noticeably absent from any fighter’s apparel.

Not sure how reputable these sources are, but since there’s more than one of them, we’ll put this in the “possibly true” file for now. What makes it more plausible is Affliction’s association with Randy Couture. Couture’s “Xtreme Couture” t-shirt line is a sub-label of Affliction, and if the UFC was petty enough to forbid the wearing of Xtreme Couture gear during Wanderlei Silva‘s UFC All Access shoot, then we’d believe they’d try to exert pressure on his parent company by banning Affliction altogether. Of course, what makes this less plausible is that the UFC’s biggest stars — Chuck Liddell and Georges St. Pierre among them — all rep hard for Affliction. The UFC isn’t crazy enough to damage relationships with their last remaining big names over t-shirts. Are they? We’ll update you when we know more…

MMA fans have to be some of the dumbest people in the world. Dana is to be thanked for his efforts early on and condemned for his more recent shortsightedness. Affliction is another bandwagon "I want to dress like a fighter in my overpriced t-shirt" company. I laugh when I see you goons in your affliction and Tapout shirts.

If most of you owned your own ( busniess,) you would go under because you don't understand that this is what this is. (Business). Without people like "Dana White" most of these guy's would be fighting in a back yard. (Chump change) I'm not takeing anything away from the fighters. They work hard. (but) They aren't fighting for free. That makes it (busniess). When you work for a company you want it to be susessfull as possible. The more profit the the company has, the more money there is to be made. If someone I was doing busniess with was opening up to compete with me "I" would do my best to shut them down. TAP THEM OUT!!........(In a busniess sorta way) Affliction does and will see it the same way......As for me.....I think Dana White has enough busniess sense to stay way out infront of his competition. I hope you feel like you've been to school. .....You may now kiss my ring.

Affliction is starting it's own MMA organization, why would UFC promote for a rival company?
It's a business.

I am sure that Dana's reasoning is petty but this is not something unusual. The NFL only allows its athletes to wear approved sponsor gear during games. So what is different about this? The UFC is within their rights as an organization not to give free publicity to a potentially competing organization.

Don't get me wrong, I think Dana White is a poor public face for the UFC and MMA in general but I don't think this particular move is all that outrageous..

Sadly, this story is 100% true. Affliction has been banned. It really hurts the fighters more than anyone because they can't supplement their income with appearance fee income by wearing the clothing to UFC events.

Dana and the UFC are retarded do they really think that there would not be a single Copy of their "product"?....ok thats annoying but to ban a clothing line is just showing how scared they are of someone acually organizing MMA just like UFC..

I know what your Typo is, you accidentally left your OppositeOfTheTruthLock on. You're an idiot if you think Dana is the reason for MMA's popularity. He's nothing more than a bald dancing monkey for Zuffa and its shareholders.

Thank god. I was about to go apeshit at UFC 79 will all the doofus ass douchebags and their mother wearing Affliction.

Fuck what is going on with the Dana hatred. You should be thankfull to him, if the MMA is what it is today, its because of him. Im glad he dont give all the big star what they want, its business and you cannot make everybody happy.

White is damn cool.

Nah I disagree Cory. The UFC already has a huge stronghold over the MMA scene at present. It's coverage worldwide is second to none and it pays the best wages. Most aspiring young MMA fighters' dream is to fight in the UFC. When a big star leaves, another star is made. I can't see Dana White nor the UFC taking a backseat in MMA for the forseeable future to be honest. It's already such a huge franchise.
Cory- January 24, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Give it 5 years if the UFC keeps allowing Dana white to hold his grudges and continue being the asshole he is to the fighters once all the big names get outta contract I can see them not wanting to come back to the UFC so in my own long term opinion the UFC is going to be one of those Organizations with no talent and not making enough money to get by.
Olie- January 24, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I like Affliction clothing even if it is over-priced. Being banned from UFC can only be a good thing in terms of exclusivity of owning any Affliction stuff... well in the UK anyway.

In fact, I'm going off to the Affliction store now. I want a belt but it won't let me buy one from the website.
