Yushin Okami Officially the UFC’s Unluckiest Fighter

Yushin Okami
(This was going to be part of a new tourism campaign for the nation of Japan, but even they thought Okami was too boring.)

It’s not enough that Yushin Okami keeps getting overlooked in the UFC’s middleweight title picture.  Now an injury has forced him out his UFC 98 bout with Dan Miller, further pushing him into the land of the also-rans.  So who will replace Okami against the larger of the two Miller boys?  How about Ed Herman, who absolutely no one brings up when the conversation turns to guys who deserve a shot at Anderson Silva.  And the most telling part is, Herman vs. Miller feels like a fight that makes perfect sense.

The UFC announced Okami’s knee ligament injury earlier today via Twitter, and that’s already kind of weird.  Yeah, we’re on Twitter too, but we’re just two guys and when we write updates in a casual, colloquial style, it doesn’t feel quite so much like when your dad pretends to like Rick Ross in order to be “down.”

The fact that the UFC was making Okami fight Miller – who is a good fighter but still relatively inexperienced with only three UFC fights and twelve pro fights overall – was enough to let him know that he wasn’t next in line to face Silva, as many people thought he deserved to be.  Now Silva goes up to light heavyweight to face Forrest Griffin while Maia and Marquardt battle to see who gets the next shot at the middleweight strap, so Okami gets forced even further down the food chain.

Honestly, did this guy piss off some crazed gypsy woman at some point?  He’s as cursed as you can be and still win so many fights.  Not only is he not getting a rematch with the current champion, who he owns a DQ victory over, now he can’t even keep collecting paychecks by beating the UFC’s up-and-comers.  Our collective heart goes out to you, Okami.  Whatever you did to deserve this fate, we hope it was worth it.

Poor Yushin, have an Ice Cream cone. Maybe even two.

Ed Herman is a bitch, if he ever gets a title shot they should dismantle the division.

fuck yeah. give Herman a shot. or Nate Quarry for that matter. nobody give that guy any respect and he's still one of the top fighters in the world. his losses were a title shot against Rich Franklin and then he got submitted by Demian Meia. Someone needs to realize these two are still in the division.

YEahHHhhh!!!!!!!!!

Yushin Okami is now going to poop in the Lake of the Forbidden Fighter.

Yushin is very unattractive.

Its one part him getting overlooked and one part him getting injured at the wrong damn times. The dude is 7-1 with his only loss being against Franklin, he's gotta get his shot someday, especially since he's got a W over Silva already, even though its a DQ dont you think Anderson would want to avenge that?

so happy about this one. Hopefully he retires or gets dropped by the UFC.

Most boring fighter in the UFC hands down.

The most under rated fighter in the UFC!

its not like he can beat a GOD anyway...

@anonymiss

if you think Anderson Silva is a god, ask god why he can't finish a fight that was easily his.

War Okami, one of the few japanese fighters to uphold the fighting spirit in the house of dana white

Anonymous,

"WAR" is not a term i would use in conjuction to Okami.

Try "sleep","snooze", or anal rape of little school girls named CAPS LOCK HAL

I fell bad for Okami, but I seriously haven't been dying to see him in most any fight he has been in since he fought Rich Franklin (and I wanted to see that more for Franklin, than Okami). I was far more excited to see Maia and Marquardt face each other, than see Maia vs. Okami, or Marquardt vs. Okami.

I think of the 5 guys that have a legit chance at earning a title shot (Maia, Marquardt, Bisping, Henderson, Okami), nobody is clamoring to see Okami get that fight. I would rather see Anderson Silva pound any of the first four, rather than Okami. I think Silva vs. Maia, Marquardt, Bisping, or Henderson sells much better than vs. Okami. Have Okami fight either Leites or Cote after this next fight, or the loser of the Maia/Marquardt or Bisping/Henderson fights, and of he wins impressively, then he might get a shot.

Or have Okami fight Wanderlei once Franklin beats him... that would be a good fight to get him more popularity. Plus, when Wandy loses to Franklin, he is probably one fight away from being cut, so why not send him out on a boring note vs. Okami to ruin his marketability for another promotion.

Dana and the Fertittas are just scared the belt will go to Japan, allowing Dream (former owners of Pride) to bank on that fact and challenge the UFC's dominance.

not to hate on making money, but, its purely capitalism that keeps Okami from the title shot.

that and Dana White's hate of all that "pussy-ass faggoty japanese food he has eat every time he goes there.. even the 7-11's sell faggot fuckin jap food"

Yushin Okami Officially the UFC’s New David Terrell!!!!!!! aleast injury wise

Ok even my father knows Rick Ross sucks.

Anderson Silva was had quite a few fights in Pride, hah i doubt if Okami won (no chance in hell) it would have anything to do with Dream or Dream competing with UFC, that doesn't even make sense. What you are saying is that by Okami winning that would make the fighters better in Dream? You're an idiot, capitalism is the devil but you're the only person i've ever seen try to blame it for something as retarded as this.

Okami Vs. Wandy sounds good to me.

Fucking LOL

Is that a Harry Potter sweater Okami is wearing?

Yeah Okami came to the Quidditch Cup this year.

@portland mma:

i think somewhere in all your broken engrish and mangled sentences you've let on to the fact your a fuckinn idiot. Please refrain from trying to engage in a troll war - unless you understand english, you lose from the beginning.

What you is wrote is hardly worth an retort from on this part.

Okami beat anderson by getting knocked out cold, that's not a very good accomplishment

he's just another average middle weight fighter, like jason mcdonald or ed herman

ufc is right to put marquardt and maia in line for a title shot, both of them could kick the shit out of okami anyday

give ed herman a title shot? i guess but that just goes to show just how weak the middle weight division is. don't know what okami has done to deserve the shaft over and over but fuck...it's a good thing he wasn't scheduled to fight for the title because he would've pulled out anyway.

Okami deserved a shot for almost 2 years now

@ norremo: comment of the week.
Still, Okami does not mind going right after Silva which makes for an exiting fight. Maia vs. Silva would be like Leites vs Silva II. Silva is just boring against guys that are exclusively BJJ.

Idk y so many people want to give Okami so much shit or peg him down.
He's a good fighter with a good record in the UFC. Never have u heard any bitching come out of his mouth, he fights whoever whenever and does his job.
Do i believe he deserves a shot? Most Definitely!!! He may not be the most exciting
but he is technical and clean and does bang when it comes down to it.
Marquardt and Maia are deserving fighters but none have had to wait for such
a long time as Okami has.

True talk from "Realist"!!

Ed Herman is no longer the one fighting Dan Miller...mmafrenzy.com as well as mmamania.com both report Chael Sonnen is now filling Okamis place.

Nice Article

Ed Herman??? LOL!!! Get real.... Okami is in a class far above Herman. He in no way deserves a shot at Anderson Silva. Joke.

He is standing in front of the Kinkaku-ji Temple. Pimp.

I'd say okami earned a no 1 contenders match, not a title match

he was on a pretty long win streak but then he lost to franklin (lose to franklin and you have to prove yourself again with a string of wins)

since then he beat 3 medicore fighters, if he beats one of the better fighters (franklin, henderson, damian, marquardt) then he deserves a title shot

yup, pretty unlucky.. he's got a while to go before he reaches David Terrell status.. but pretty unlucky nonetheless..

@ Nikolai

I see and some what agree with what u have to say its a very valid point.
But if u guys recall the Franklin-Okami fight the first 2 rounds saw very
mild, clean, technical fighting. in which no way will i fault either fighter for,
but regardless it was rather timid only to have Okami push the action and really
take it to franklin.(3rd round Okami) although it wasnt enough(Franklin W via Dec.)

For petes sake Okami lost to FRANKLIN one of the best middleweights.
So some slack is due. And as far as the level of competition that Okami
has been fighting up to now, thats not his fault he doesnt pick his fights
you kinda rather have to put a bit of pressure on Joe Silva to give him a
legit fighter so he can pull away from the pack and establish himself as a #1
contender.Plus DQ or no DQ he still has a win over Anderson. the ufc can easily
bank money from that fight....just think about it.

Okami-Hendo-Maia-Bisping-Marquardt. you cant go wrong no matter what guy
you put in there but like i said b4 Okami has waited and is well deserving.

@ Realist

i doubt you'll see this but...

i agree he get's screwed over by joe silva, and also that 'W' against silva has a money angle for the ufc

but it seems like a lot people's logic goes like this: okami is getting screwed over and he got a DQ win over anderson, therefore it proves he's the best in the division

c'mon, does that really mean he's "deserving" of a title shot?

and it may appear that he's been waiting for a while, however he was given chance against franklin, if he beat franklin he probably would have been given the title shot, but he didn't, so he has to start again (and yes it's gonna be quite slow thanks to joe silva)

he deserves better opponents, not a title shot
